CHAPTER IV.
"Dors er gen'man in de hall, Marse
Jack, an-er he say he wants ter see
yer," said Uncle Neil, as he approached
Mr. Lund, who was enjoying bis mid
day meal. "
"Well, what does he want, Ned?"
"I dunuo, sab. Here's a keard he
gi' me; an' he Is jes as perlite as er nig
ger at er barbaku. He parts his ha'r
in der middle, an' his moustache sticks
sut like er horned owl. Oolly! but
he's flxt up fit ter kill. He got nn a
King Albert coat an' bis hat is sho'
silk, Hishandslsaswhlteas'er "
"Let me see the card," demanded
Mr. Lund, cutting short Uncle Ned's
description of the gentleman. " 'Aaron
Humphrey, tutor, professor of lan
guages, muslo and etiquette.' Well,
pretty well posted, but we wanted a
lady teacher for our girls. Show the
gentleman into the parlor and tell him
that I will see him presently. I would
not think ot placing the girls under
the care of a gentleman," continued
Mr. Lund.
"I cau't quite agree with you,
Brother," said Mrs. Young. "If he Is
a true gentleman the girls would soon
become acquainted and would feel as
easy In the presence of a gentleman as
they would in the presence of a lady,
and more, as a rule. Ladies add great
ly to one's household duties, while
gentlemen are comparatively no
trouble; and again, you must remem
ber that you did not specify a prefer
ence for ladies in your advertisement
and It would not be right to let the
gentleman gn without considering his
application."
"You are right about that, my Bister,
as you are In all things, and If he
proves to be competent and can furnish
satisfactory references, I can't see how
I can get around employing him; and
I hope that the omission In my adver
tisement will prove to be a fortunate
blunder."
As Mr. Lund entered the parlor, a
medium-sized, bandsome man, with
deep blue eyes and a complexion that
most any woman would envy, arose
and bowed respectfully.
"You are Mr. Humphrey?" inquired
Mr. Lund.
"At your service, sir," answered the
gentleman, in u deep, mellow voice,
and in a manner whieh showed that
he was at perfect ease. "I came In an
swer to your advertisement."
"You have taught before?"
"I have been a teacher for more than
eight years," answered Mr. Hum
phrey, with a smile, self-satisfied in its
nature.
'Yoo arc well posted, I presume?"
inquired Mr. Lund, somewhat doubt
fully, as the stranger did not seem
more than twenty-two years old, and
Mr. Lund had mentally subtracted 8
from 22, thus placing the applicant at
the tender age of 14, when he coo
meneed teaching.
"In several branches, I am, sir.
In English literature, French, geom
etry, astronomy, and vucal and instru
mental music."
You seen, to be quite young, sir, to
have mastered all these studies and
have been teaching the same for the
past eight years. May I ask how old
you were when you commenced leach
ing?" "I commenced teaching in just one
month after I bad gaiued my majority.
I am now twenty-nine years old. I
see," continued Mr. Humphrey, "that
you doubt my ability on account of my
youthful apjiearance. I will," hesald,
"state for your information that from
childhood I have been confined in
doors, and greatly, too, against my
own Inclinations; but tate so decreed
and I was compelled to submit.
While," continued be, "my calling Ib a
high aud honorable one, it is neither a
lucrative nor a pleasant one. I tell
you, sir, the truth, when I say that I
have never seen the beauties of nature
except from a car window, My mother
was born and reared on a farm, and
my great desire for a country life was
doubtless Inherited, aud it was this
desire that prompted me to answer
your advertisement in person. I pray,
Mr. Lund, that you consider my appli
cation. I am able to furnish the . best
of references, and I think I can give
you satisfaction, sir."
Mr. Lund was, by this time, favora
bly Impressed. The gentleman's
affable manner, his open, honest aud
frank countenance had completely
won Mr. Lund over, and be has never,
until this day, had cause to regret his
answer to the gentleman's earliest en
treaties. He said, "I do not ask you
for references. I am perfectly satUfled
as to your ability, and as to your hon
esty and integrity, excuse me it Is
plainly written on your countenance,
As to terms, we will talk that over
lateh Yon can consider yourself ei.
gaged. As It la our custom," said he,
li. teed the 'stranger within our gates,'
dinner has been ; prepared for you.
Com.? uow, and I will Introduce you to
my sisier wlm Is also my housekeeper
aud yoor pupils. Next I will Intro
duce you to a mid-day country meal,
which we call dinner."
"Well, don' dat beat yer?" solilo
quised Uncle Ned, who had stood all
the time near the open door, hat In
hand. "Dat man looks like er Juok-er-dlmuus,
but he's alio' made outer de
right kind uv stuff." ,
We will now leave little Emma
Luud aud Edna Latimer lu the care of
the competent and trustworthy Jpro
fessor, Aaron Humphrey, where they
remained for a period of six years, or
until Cupid usurped the place between
the accomplishments they had attained
and further advancement.
