The Astoria Budget! says what it
thinks as follows: When a business
man wants to retrench on account of
the stringency of money, and geueral
hard times, he begins by begins by

up appearances make a lively and val

Lightening played a peculiar freak
last Bunday evening on the "old
Brown place," near Miltou says the
Pendleton East-Oregonian. The tele
phone line passes through the prem
ises and just as the header and thresh
ers crews were coming to supper a
bolt of lightning struck the telphone
wire in front of the house and about a
dosen men who happened to be near
qj were knocked flat on the ground,
and two horses standing In the barn
wen abo thrown down.1 The light
Ding, when It struck the wire, appear
ed to disintegrate and fly all over the
(lace. Strange to say, no one was
seriously injured, although all com
eomplained of having a headache and
several were left almsst blind for a
short time.
