of the bird hitherto called the
Mongolian pheasant be changed

Reports from several cities of
Asiatic Turkey says that cholera
has appeared in many districts
and is spreading rapidly. Along
the lower Tigris and Shat-el-Arab
rivers the people are dying by the
, thousands. Whole villiages are
deserted by those fleeing from
the pest. The panic has become
so general that few families wait to
hurv their dead or even to care for
their sick, but flee to adjoining
towns to escape infection,

appointed Hon. T. J. JMck,
of Halsey, as Collector of Customs
for Portland. Dan 11. -Murphy as
U. S. Atty for Oregon, and H. C.
Grady as U. S. Marshal for Ore
gon. The President could not
have appointed a more suitable
man than Black to fill the position
and his many friends in and
around Lebanon were glad to hear
of his appointment.
The Cresent Citv Athletic Clnh
at New Orleans, proposes hereafter
to have monthly slugging contests,
with an admission fee small enough
for the geneeal public, the profits
to be divided with the management
and sluggers. ;
The collection of Washington
relics at Mt. Vernon has been en
riched by several gifts., The addi
tions include two siWer lamps and
Indian vase, once owned by Wash
ington, and a valuable collection
of books.
Why don't Oregon send some of
her strawberries back to the
World's Fair at Chicago. Some
of these berries would open the
eyes of Eastern people if they
coulp see them.
Sontag and Evans, the two train
robbors and desperadoes, of Culif.,
have at last been captured and
are now in jail. Both are badly
wounded, and Sontag is considered
as being fatal.
The rains this week will make
