hire in our state legislature was

little more work was done, and
beyond all doubt the work could
have beon performed this year for

of the clerks. It is high time the
people of the state take hand in
this matter and put a stop to it.
This thing -of taxing the people of

f r the sake of having a lot of
giddy girls around the state house
to entertain the legislators during
their leisure hours iB becoming
decidedly tiresome.
THE CHINESE MUST GO.
. The Supremo Court of the Unit
ed States has decided to be consti
tutional the law compelling
the Chinese to register, and failing
to do so, to he sent out of the
country. The court was br no
means of the same opinion. Dis
senting opinions were read by the
Uluet Justice an a others, strongly
argued the unconstitutionality of
the law. 'Ot courBO this decision
settles the question as far as this
law is concerned, but it opens up a
wav tor unending trouble with
China and her subjeotB in this
country. It may cause the ex
pulsion and possibly the death of
the missionaries now in China.
Chinese riots in Frisco and other
densely populated districts are not
impossible. Larg-j indemnities
will then have to be paid by the
Government, as have heretofore
been paid. There iB a possibility
ot a sea ot trouble in store lor us
but it may all pass off without
any particular danger aftor all, it
is so to be hoped. There nwy be
a drop of consolation in all of this.

ionary men and women and the
millions of dollars sent to China,
may be saved to this country,
where their labors are sorely need
ed and the people's money could be
put to a lar better use than expe
rimenting with the doubtful and
costly theory of Christianizing the
"heathen Chinee." Our own
country even our own state and
county need the services of mis'
sionaries far more than China
does. If they do not actually
need it more they at least deserve
it more. But christianizing one's
own countrymen and neighbors iB
but a homely occupation, it seems.
There is a fasoination around the
heathen, a glory attendant npon a
foreign missionary that seems to
allure these honest but visionary
people. Elevate and christianize
our neighbors and let the heathen
go until our home work is done.
The negroes of Tennessee are
preparing to come to California in
a body, as they have been led to
believe thrt they can live a life of
luxurious ease, cat watermelons
all the year round, have Chinese
to wait on them and fan them at 5
cents a day, unil find chickens

With the approach of warmer
weather and the absence of na
ture's cleansing storms, a decent
regard for the health of our citizens
should result in a general clean-up
of our streets and alleys. If any
one is not decent enough to do it
in his own iuteretB, it should be
done in the interest of others. ,
When typhoid fever or cholera
lavB away" its victims, we gather
and say in solemn phrase, "The
Lord gave, and the Lord hath
taken away," when it is usually
the result of a failure to observe
the ordinary laws of health.
We have the highest regard for
physicians, but we do not wish to
furnish them any unnecessary
potronage in the removal of dis
ease that may as well be prevented
by ordinary care. We hope there
will be a general clean up.
