JEAN'S LETTER
Six yoars old! breeches broken at the
knees; bur blond, early, to nctt and
thick it would have coiffud the heads of
two pretty Indies; two great bine eyes
that etill tried to smile a little, tDougn
they had cried to omen: a jacket veil
cut bnt tailing to rage; a girl's shoe on
one toot, a boy's boot on the other, both
ahoeand boot too wide and too long,
turned at the toe and lacking in heels
behind this was Jean.
Little Jean, so cold and hungry this
winter evening, who had eaten nothing
since noon of the day before, and who
had finallv decided to write to tuB-Yus
tin. "Sna Bow,' say yon, did Jean, who
no more knew how to write than he
knew bow to read, arrange this letter?
LiBten, for it is that which 1 am going
to tell yon. .
Below there, in the qnarter of the
Grus-Caillou, at the corner of the avenne
not far from the Esplanade, there, was a
shop, in the "days I tell of, of apnblio
writer, for in those days also there were
so many claims and petitions tp be made
to the government and so many people,
like Jean, that did not know how to
write.
And the writer that kept this shop was
an old soldier far on in years, a brave
man bnt a little testy, who was anything
bnt rich and had the additional misfor
tune of not being sufficiently chopped to
pieces to secure admission to the Hotel
des lnvalides.
Jean, without prying at all. had many
times seen him through the dingy glasses
of his little cubby bole smoking his pipe
and awaiting customers, and so today he
entered fearlessly with a civil
"Good-day, monsieur. 1 have come,

aponded, guzing over his spectacles at
the midget before him.
Jean had no cap. and was therefore
unable to lift it, but he said very po
litely: "Then excuse me!" and he turned to
reopen the door.
But, pleased with his manners,. Pere
Bonin stopped him. '
"Stayl" said he: "tell me first, little
one. it you are the son of a soldier.
"Oh, nol" said Jean, "only mamma's
sou. and she's all alone. '
i see," said the writer, "and you
have not the ten sonxT
"No. no sous at all," said Jean,
"Dor thv mother either, tis plain to
be seenl And thy letter, little one is
it to make the soup come?"
"Yes," said Jean, "exactly."
"Advance, then. Ten lines on a half
(beet. One is never too poor for that!"
And Pere Bonin spread out his paper,
dipped bis pen in the ink, and wrote at
the top of the ige. in the beautiful
hand of the quartermaster that once he
had been: ,.'"

Then a line lower: j

"Who?" demanded Jean.
"Parbleul the gentleman."
"What gentleman, monsieur!"
"The one to make the soup oonie."
Jean this time comprehended.
"But it isu't a gentleman," said he.
"Ahl bahl a lady, then?"
"Yen no that is"
"N ame of names! midget," Pere Bonin

Fere Bonin had to hastily turn nu
head, for two big tears were rolling
down his cheeks, and his reply to the
child was another question
"And when you kissed her," said he,
"Ton noticed nothing stranger
"Yes, I did," said Jean; "how cold
she was: bnt then it's always so cold in
our house.
"She shivered, then, your mamma-
