Judge Deady dbd at his home
in Portland, Or., at 7:45 o'clock the
21th hiBt. No man in this state
has so indelibly impressed hie in
dividuality upon the 1wb and
customs of this commonwealth.
No luan'B life has been so busy
shaping the destinies of Oregon.
For nearly one-half a century he
has been an active &ai potent fao
tor in his adopted Btate. He
practically framed the Code of
Oregon and let.t his powerful in
tellect in forming the constitution
of this state. Asa member of the
Territorial Legislature, the Consti
tutional Convention, the Supreme
court of the Territory and as U. S.
District Judge, he has ever wield
ed an : influence unequalled
by that of any other man
in the state. His opinions
which are numerous both oral
and written are models of grace
and have been quoted far and near,
Judge Deady was born in Mary
land in 1824, removing to Ohio in
1837. He crossed the plains tn
Oreiion in 1840 and has ever since
resided here. His place will be hard
to till.
The introduction of a bill in the
Minnesota legislature to compel
Chinamen to wear their shirts in
side of their pants reminds old
Oregonians of a measure of the
same class that found its way into
the Oregon legislature in the '60s.
Urpresentative Amos was father of
the hill, which provided that all
' Chinamen who might come into
the state to remain would be com
pellfd to forfeit their queues. This
bill failed of passage, but resulted
in giving to its orignator, Mr.
Ap)s, a title which will remain

bull and declare the puper isn't
worth reading. "Those who ride a
borrowed horse should not find

When it has been established be
yonJ peradventure that one person
has killed another, and the presid
ing judge deems life imprisonment
the proper punishment, executive
clemency should not be thought of.
It is an evil practice, this turning
a murderer loose that he may com
mit another crime. Sunday Wol
come. Another railway smash-up has
been caused by overworking the
ruin man. The engineer of the
colliding engine states that he had
Veen on duty for thirty consecutive
and could not keen awake.
The official who permitted this
violation of all common sense,
should be held responsible for the
accident. ,
Organized feminine labor has

The Czar prays for peace for

It is fatal to hero worship to see

Panama canal.
The latest "combine" is among
the tanners, who have organized
themselves together. This is not
a '"trust," for the members of the
combine say so themselves. Kx
We are the only nation in the
world-able to build and equip a
modern war ship entirely from
the products of our own soil, mines
forests manufactures and goniiiB.
Oregon alone should be able to
make this boast in a few years. '
The growth of the many chiirch
eB of Senttle is a gratifying evi
dence of the prosperity of the city.
Seattle probably has as many fine
church edifices as any city of equal
size in the country, and others arc
now boing projected. It is an en
com aging sign that in the struggle
for material advancement the
spiritual needs of the people are so
well taken care of. Seattle Post
Intelligencer.. When the sharks wanted the
mortgage tax law repealed they
pointed to Washington as an ex
aple of unprecedented prosperity.
Washington, not as well satisfied
with her prosperity, looked across
the river at hir more conservative
neighbor and passed the mortgage
tax law which has been tho great
"obstructor of Oregon's progress."
Strange how these things are view
ed by great men. Dispatch.
