gested programme for exercises to be
conducted by the schools on this day.
The circular is prefaced by these re
murks, "Arbor day, from bring an humble
expedient of one of our Western states,
a few years ago, has become, It may
he said, one of our national holidays.
Its original design has lieen modified
since Us observance has been con
nected with our schools. It Is now
nut only a day for tree planting, both
for economic and aisthctio purposes,
but its cbservauce has been made the
menus or imparling much valuable
knowledge in regard to plant and tree
life, of cultivating in the young the
faculty of observation, nnd kindling
in.thelr uiinds an Interest In natural
objects which will be a life-long source
of pleasure. It is not too much to hope
also, that this Arbor day festival, en
giiitlng our children lu Its observance
so generally .audio pleasantly with
songs, recitations and planting of trees
ami shrill around the scboolbouses
and along the streets or In public
parks, may have the effect of bringing
forward soon a generation who will
fee both the value and the beauty of
trees, as hitherto they have not been

the calamities are upon us which have
befallen other countries through the

A Storm.
It is said that March is the month of
storms. We were convinced that this
is true lust Friday evening about 7
o'clock, when without any warning
our disirs were opened and people of
all Bize and age, 50 strong, began to
rush In with basket and sacks well
filled with ccfiee, sugar, flour, meat,

Mr. Moist (striie to Oreimu in
1849, from Bucllngtoii, Iowa, and took

lived up to the time of his death. Ho
was married to MlfS lone Ralston. He
ansa man of sterling worth, and was
highly renpectod hy ail who kite him.
He lias been a great sufferer ahnttt five
years, but bore bis miOi-rlug with
Christian forlltude.being fully resigned
to tile B ill of his Heavenly Father. Ho
leaves a nlfe and three children anil
many friends to mourn tbeir loss." The
funeral services were beld at his home,
and the burial was ut Allan y, by the
Masoulc Order. May God's blessing
rest upon the bereaved family.

obituary.
Mr. J. R. Oatcbell was born ill Maine
Oct. 9, 1848, and died in this city, Tues
day morning, March 14, 1893. He was
married lu Canada ill 1861. DeceaJtd
was the father of nine children, eight -of
whom are still living. He was 4B
years, 5 months and 5 days old, at the
time of his death. Mr. Uatcheil has
lived here for about four years. His
mother and sister arrived in tills state
from South Dakota and located here a
few mouths ago. The funeral services
were couduoted by Rev. Lamar, In the
Baptist church, and the remaius were
Interred In the Dodge cemetery.
