Gen. Benjamin F. Butler, lawyer,
statesman, politician and million
Hire manufacturer, died at Mb
Washington residence, at half-post
1 o'clock Wednesday morning, Jan.
11th.
The General haB been watching
a ctse in the supreme court, on tine
coast, in which he was deeply in
terested, and which was decided
against him, and very likely the
loss of the case had some enect on
his health.
His death created immense sur
prise, as it was not even known he
was ailing, ma deatn is saia to
tiave been from failure of heart ac
tion. Shortly after 1 o'clock in the
morning he had a fit ol coughing,
and his expectoration was discol
ored with blood. He did not ap
pear to think serionsly of it, how
ever, and after me valet had assisted
him to his bed, said, "That's all,
West, you need not do anything
more." and aunarently went to
Bleep. In a few moments, however,
big heavy breathing again aroused
alarm. It was fully htteen min
utes before aid could be secured,
and then it was een the General
was already in "extremis," death
ensuing almost immediately.
Later A dispatch dated Jan. 17th
states that the utoy on the body of
Gen. Butler showed the cause of death
was the bursting of .small blood-vessel
in the brain, caused by a violent fit of
-roughing. All the organs were in an
excellent condition, and but for this
accidental cause he would probably
have lived many years. His brain
weighed four ounces more than tbat of
Daniel Webster, one of the largest on
record.
