The local editur, in proportion to his means does more for his town than any other ten men, and in all fairness, man with man, he ought to be supported, not be cause you nuty happen to like him nr admire his writing, but because a local paper is the best investment a commu nity can make. It may not be brilliant or crowded with great thoughts, but financially it is more of a benefit to a community than the preacher or teach er. Understand us now, we do not mean morally or Intellectually, but fk nanciaily; and yet on the moral ques tion you will find the majority of the local papers are on the right side. To day the editors of local -papcre do the most work for the least money of any men on earth. Subscribe or your lo cal paper, not as a chanty, but as an investment. . : ' NOTICE FOR PUBLICATION. He will be here for sometime looking after his hirees in this county. Dr. V. Gesner has been appointed by the Interior department, examining surgeon for Crook county to examine applicants for pensions, etc Banders Logan passed through town Tuesday with 268 head of One beef cat tle which he was taking to Deschutes bridge to deliver to beef buyers. Bheriff Booth returned Thursday from the Shoeftyand Gird creek oouni"1 tries. He Bays the ranchers over there have "harvested immense crops, and have an excelleut quality of grain. Dr. Bites accompanied by his daugh ters, Mrs. J. W. Howard and Mrs. C, F. Smith, started on Tuesday for the doctor's home at Dallas, where the ladies will remain a few weeks visiting A. M. Griffin was In town on Friday of last week eu route to Coburg after his family, He has taken a place on Buck creek and proposes to make Crook ' county his home In the future. Peroy Davis and Henry Berohtorf are seeking for the hidden treasures of the earth somewhere in the Blue mountains one hundred miles east of here. They will spend a month searching for a mine which they im agine exists, and will return to Prlne vllle millionaires, it is hoped. Owing te Mrs. Slayton having con tracted a severe cold and sore throat at Albany, she was unable to be here in time to take her place In the public schools at the opening last Monday, and her place has been filled by Miss Rova Dodson during the week. Mrs. Slayton expects to be In her school room next Monday. James Conolly, ef Burnt Ranch, was in town last Saturday with a wagon load ef very fine apples. They were as large as those raised in,Webfnot In early days, and in flavor surpassed anything Willamette valley ever rais ed. They were raised in the eastern part of Crook county, and still we are told this is not a fruit country. Umatilla county will not be safe ground fur prize fighters to practice the "manly" art so long as W. J. Fur nish is sheriff. On Monday of last week a putty of Walla Walla sports, 150 strong, came over Into Umatilla county to witness a prize fight, but sheriff Furnish Intercepted them, and with three deputies frustrated the plans of the combatants and held up the ISO sports who were spoiliug for the fray. This week Howard & Baldwin de livered their beef at Deschutes bridge. The average weight of their three, four and five-year-old steers was 112 lbs., which we believe is the best aver age any band of cattle from this part of the country has shown this season. One steer weighed 1875 lbs. and an other 1020 lbs. When such cattle as these can be raised in Crook county It is folly to say the range is exhausted. NOTICE FOR PUBLICATION.
