Irish will submit to every privation

and is not a charity.
In London many people get relief who

DIFFERENCE IN, THE METHODS OF

Moral Conmffe of th Trne Phv.,leliui A
Ilrro Man Who Know Themftr Th

A somewhat extended exjierienoe with
men, and an occasional woman, convinces
Vie that there is as great a difference in the
methods of good men who dottire to help
their fellows as there is between them and
bad men who strive constantly to hurt their
brothers and sisters. Every man has his
own way. It is fo ly for writers iu the press,
for ministers in the pulpit, for public teach
ers in any forum whatever, to insist upon it
that their way is the only way. Effective
work is done by upright engines, by hori
sontal entities, by oscillating engines. It is
by the quality and quantity of effect pro
duced, not the manner in which the work is
done, men must be judged.
1 look at doctors with wonder and awe. In
my judgment a doctor needs, first of all,
, moral courage. It requires no very great
( degree of physielal courage to stand before a
man whose iufbunod eye betokens the rage
that roars within him, t-ocause, being a man,
! yon naturally liavo no fear for another man
j physically. Tlie Issue of the fight must be
one of two ways. You whip him or bewhii
yon, and, of course, you are prejiarai to take
the chance, liut to go into a sick room,
where, in the first place, your senses are of
fended, you sen unpleasant pictures, you bear
discordant sounds, above ail you detect of-
aary restraint, being uncomfortable or ' ,onJV8 on, you are brought in contract
even disirracefnl. They therefore shun
it. If they may eat without work in
tome other way, they will; if not, many
of thorn will work. Vhy are these people
in such condition? It is a duty we owe
with a condition of things abnormal, from
wlueu you naturally turn as from any other
uuisanee that required moral courage. That
of itself would determine me. I could no
more endure the close confinements of a sick
every sense, and most especially to the sensi
tive nerves ot the nasal organ, than I could
draw a wuibt of lO.UiXi puuudsalong&dusty

a fact that we are all, iu certain lines, unique,
peculiar, individual, it is equally a fact that
we all represent great bodies of similarly
orgaaizedt identically developed men or wo

Well, yea, but is it a good beart that gives
its last dollar, but wuuld hesitate, even if he

thought a moment, 1 don't believe it would
be a physical possibility for mo, who have
pretty good control of my physical organs at
that, to make a practice of visiting hospitals,
of coming iuto personal contact with disease,
of upsetting my stomach, by annoying my
nose. It is oue thing to draw a check and
send it by mail or messenger; it is another
thing to go about dung good, visiting the
sick, helping the friendless, uplifting the be
reaved, attending to tbe literal, physical
necessities of poor, dirty devel iu the very
gutters of uumatuty.
Talk about giving money as an evidence
of generosity. Tbat's all nonsense. It all
depends upon circumstances. What sort of
generosity is it when you have $100 iu your
pocket aud somebody comes along asking you
for five or ten, that you give it, without re
gard to anything under heavens except the
particular 100 you have in your pockot 1
That I00 may belong to some creditor. You
may owe that money to some man to whom
its payment would be a positive-relief. You
don't think of equities, you don't care the
turn of your hand for your creditor; you let
Browne walk all over creation rather tuau
deprive yourself of a moment's comfort,
peace, happiness, luxury; yet because you
give live or ten dollars to some poor devil
wbo bappens to want it, you are credited tbe
world around as betug a generous hearted,
free handed man, wbo would give his last
dollar to help a creature iu distress.
You buy a iMiperoi a newsboy, ounand
biiu a dime. Xtather than be bothered to
wait for the change, or to have his dirty
littw fists pawtug overa handful of coin to
find the change, you say, "Ob, keep it. Never
mind that." Why do you say it 1 Are you
touched with pity for tbe boy's necessities 1
Is it the logical sequence of any caret ul
thought, estimate, judgment of the little
ohapf bo you even go so far as to think
that it would please the boy! Not a bit of
it. It is, nine times out of ten, an inchoate
desire, au unthought of impulse to be rid of
the annoyance of the boy aud the unpleas
antness of his dirt; yet some benevolent old
lady, looking over her spectaclf and her
stomach, seeing you let the little boy gooff
with five or six cents more than belong to
him, smiles all over with cherubic gleam,
and tells her family, whom she joins iu hum
ble home that evening, about "the generous
wan who gave flvo cents to a little newsboy."
