Tit reform party now being or

lutioniie the polities of the State,
nd they will io it on shorter no
tice than it was done in Kansas
nd tome other parts of the Union.
1m Samuels arrived in the city
nf Hig Feet several days since, hav
ing left th ' turtle" on the plain? to
struggle with the dome of our State
capital, until the grass springs up
in .185)3, ' . .
' 1 la reported that there will be a
large Democratic daily started in
2rlUnd soon, but the report has
Veeome o trite that we are loth to
.believe it; however, we say that the
nan who starts another daily in
Portland that shall equal the Ore-
conian must ha ve plenty of money,
something more than a modicum of
brains and a life-long experience
Jn Journalism if he expects to sue
-cecq. '
A prediction that the Alliance
will fcwecn the Rat of Oreeon is not
. -without foundation when we re
member that a large percentage of
the increasing population are mem
fcers of that organisation and that
the State is ripe for reform. The
industrial classes have despaired
of any satisfactory . legislation
through the old parties and they
fwsry naturally turn to an organ
juatiot which offers some amelior
ation to tne laboring classes.
voral le to growth or development,
the reverse would bo true of pood,

tion for eiiiritual growth.
"Evil a necessity"? You might
as well s;iv th.it it is necessary for
a man to be dishonest in order to
nnv his debts: or for a man to be
unmoral in order to be moral.
Hut what is "spiritual life" and
"vi-Ki-table life?" Vegetable life is
that life which, under suitable con
ditions, produces a vegetable organ
ism: and spiritual life is that
life which, under suitable condi
tions, produces a spiritual organism.
But Mr. JftRo Is impatient with
those who look upon life as a mys
tery, and he savs "Away with mys
tery and rtnrkness ana let us nave
light." Has Mr. Jago given us any
lieht on this subject? No. Having
mistake growth, development and
organization for life, he thinks
that life is not mystery. Hut in
spite of his eftort, life is yet a mys
terious phenomenon. It Is a lorce
working in direct opposition to an
other forces known to man. Chem
ists cannot analyse it, for no sooner
do they seise upon it than it is
gone. "When suitable conditions
surround it, it builds up an organ-
ism, inhabits it for awhile, then
leaves it to topple over and decay
From whence it came and whither
it has gone we cannot know. The
greatest scientists of the world have
grappled with it, and still say thet
it is a mvsterv. And I think that
when Mr. Jago comes to under
stand himself he will see that life
is a mystery still.
Behold the life force in the tree.
If not hindered by conditions it
lifts a massive form many feet
alove the surface of the earth. All
this is contrary to nature. See also
the life force in man, building out
of matter the most wonderful or
ganism known to man. In the
top of this organism it places
the reasoning faculties, and above
them, to control man, is the moral

Tf prohibition does not prohibit in

To Drove his statement he says,

those following it, in this quotation,

I saw an extract from your paper in
the Oregonian of Feb. 2th, stating
your views on the hcens question.
which snys: "If liquor selling lie
good thing, let everybody sell it; if it
he a bad thins, let nobodv sell it," I
for one thiuk your views are very sen
Bible. Iu regard to high license I see
no sense or luatice in t. t-o lone hb
thia government allows it to be made,
mat ao Ions' will it be drank, ad no
power on earth can stop it. You may
out the license aa high as you pleane,
you may make this a prohibition
State, and it will be drank, for yearn
this town would not allow aaaloon in
it, yet it was admitted that there waa
less drunkenness In the town after
the saloon started than there was be
fore. Why? Because before they
would eo to the drug store and get all
and more than they needed or wanted,
by the bottle. We have a druggist
here now, a member of the church,
who is terribly down on saloons, and
wants the license high enough to
shut them up, yet thin Christian:
brother is and has been for the past
six or seven years selling all kinds of
Honors in any quantity you may want.
Tl i i ti e class of men who want
high license to close up saloons. Drug
stores are fighting saloons in every
tawn. Again, high license makes,
men dishonest wftew they don't want
to be; makes a man sell drinks to
men when he would rather not. Why?
Because he has to make that license ;
he has to keepfvr artirks instead
of good. I say let the license be low,
the man be of good character, a bond
to keep an orderly place, and drvg
stores pay Uoe&se the same as saloons.
