President Harrison has been in
cited by the Legislature to visit
Oregon. What a pity that the
President can't be here before that
body adjourns: he might get a few
pointets, you Know.
The medical faculty of the Wil
lamette University received lately
an invoice f genuine Teutonic
lvmph. What if it should trans
pire that Dr. Koch and the Iron
Chancellor, who was bo quick to
scent wormy meat, are sending their
baccili to Uncle Sam in retaliation
Ibr American trichina? It is strange
that men will experiment with
tratrid substance whose only merit
in the m&ioritv of cases is that it
makes death doubly sure.
Storv's bill providing for a state
minina bureau and state mineral
osist. is to our mind one of the
most important bills before the
present session. Had Oregon taken
thia step Years aero our mining in
dustries would not be in their in
fancy to-day. It is passing strange
that our mineral resources should
have been overlooked for so many
rears and ttdioinine states and
territories be allowed to absorb a
Tast amount of capital and brawn
simply by making this the one
prominent feature in drawing b.th
population and capital.
The penitentiary at Salem will
have to be enlarged to accommo
date the increasing number of
criminals. When will our law
makers see that it is cheaper to ed
-sucate the jToung aright than it is to
take care of the criminals. It may
not be palatable to some, but it is
true nevertheless, that the Sunday
schools are doing more by their
Treventive influence than all the
gibbets and jails in the land.

vm account of a laegmg inspi
ation, the publication of tho
lirownsvill Times was dela3"ed three
days last week, which gave Editor
McDonald, that champion of the
people's rights, Southern Linn's
guardian angel, a chance to deliver
one oi nis cniiaisn i niuipics.
Aftei-ten days inflation he does
not, as Miltori would say, "Rise to
the full height of this great argu
ment." There is this peculiarity
stbout McDonald, he has but one
theme, county taxes, and from that
theme he never strays. We had
thought that the story of unequal
taxation had become too hackneyed
to call forth further remarks. It
is well for the people of Albany,
that the enemies to her prosperity
have but this one string to play
upon, otherwise the music would
never cease. Had the Times the re
motest idea that Halsey," Coburg,
or Crawfordsville would have be
come the county seat in the event
that the county had been divided,
-would the Times have advocated
division with as much unction?
Would the Times have said any
thing about unequal taxation, or a
more satisfactory disbursement of
the people's money? We not only
ask these questions, but we insist
upon a candid answer. We could
U3e some very opprobrious and
abusive language, but we know
that it dosn't require a very high
order of talent to abuse people a
parrot can do that. Our apology
for deigning to notice this pleasant
rejoinder of the Times is expressed
in an old proverb, "Answer a fool
According to his folly."
THE OAISS OF THE YEAR.
As the old year goes out we rec-lc-oa
np the gains. Foremost of all
there is the admission of Wyoming
the first woman suffrage State; then
the majority report of the Judiciary
Committee of the United States
House of Representatives, in favor
' of a sixteenth amendment. Then
there is the brave canvass in South
Dakota. The battle was lo6t, as it

SOBER THOUGHTS FOR SOLEMN PEOPLE
THE DOUBTER.
Thomas was absent when Christ
ppeared to His disciples after the
resurrection, and when the appear
ance was reported to him he met
the-statement with the most reso
le skepticism. "Except," said
he, Jil shall see in His hands the
prints of the nails, and thrust my
nd into His side, I will hot be-
leve. " lo near Jus voice I wnica
sufficed for Mary Magdalene) would
not be enough; he must descend
into particular, and elect his own
standard of judgment. How will
Jesus Christ treat the doubter? A
question of transcendent import!
The doubter will come upon every
age upon what principle shall he
be met? After eight days Jesus
made a 6econd appearance to his
disciples and the doubter was pres
ent. Jesus passed at once to the
sceptical Didymus, and said, "Reach
hither thy hnger, and behold un
hands: and reach hither thy hand.
and thrust it into my side; and be
not faithless, but believing." In
stead of resenting the slight which
had been cast upon the veracity of
His disciples, instead of rebuking
an occasional absence from the
Christian fellowship, Jesus Christ
actually submits to the very tests
which the doubter himself had
elected. He was greater in that
hour than when He wrought
the chief of His miracles. He
gave, however, o gentle hint that
the time of personal, sensuous rev
elation was fast closing, and that
the spiritual era was about to open
He said, Thomas, because thou
hast seen me, thou hast believed;
blessed are they that have not seen
and yet have believed." It was an
appropriate close of the physic
dispensation, a powenul and con
vincing climax. Anv other climax
would have been a failure. Thomas
Didymus was the first doubter that
entered into peace through the
wounded Christ, and to-day there
is no other plan by which the soul
can steady itself than by resting on
the same wounds, though in a higher
and nobler sense. "Blessed are
they who have not seen, and yet
have believed." The last man who
believed by sight was not so blessed
as the first man who believed on
testimony.
