Hi
inator Jell'Mvcrs lives in Scio,
ana has at -heart- the gomt 01 mo
whole nrn!iviled county ami the
fact that lie opposes the division
is pretty good evidence that Linn's
territorial boundaries should vnt be
interfered with for merely political
reason?. 1
The West Shore, of last week,
said that' efforts were being made
to divide Linn into four counties.
This would sive one or two more
counties than the most of us ever
dreamed of, and would be carrying
matters to far by nt least three
lengths. :
t5everl towns are just now striv
ing to become county seats. This
fact goes far toward accounting for
the triple, clamor for partitioning
off our teritorv into mere town
ships. Fviemls you will have to
depend on something lieticr and less
tincertan to boom your towns, than
court houses and county records.
A saloon was opened in Dayton
week ana some of the citizens
ivretlict livelv times. As the shin
gles go on the saloon keeper's house
cratch them tumble off the houses
x his customers. Whenever he
begins to change his clothes his
patrons wiiF alo adopt a new
attire, and as it almost invariably
'happrn,it will be neither tricot
nor broadcloth.
' The Calapooia and Santlam
- wagon road bills were squelched.
' This is just about a? we expected.
The wealth of Oregon lies in the
-timber and mineral resources of the
' Cascades, and good roads would un
" lock these treasures and make Ore
gon one of the foremost states in the
: few years. With a few thousand
'..men "at work in our mines the far-
mer would find a market, for his
produce at home. Statistics show
that where more than twenty-five
per cent, of the population are en-
ftged in agricultural pursuits the
-country cannot prosper. A number
of years ago a Pensylvania governor
predicted that the time would
come when the products of that
-state would be consumed at home.
He was laughed at then, but In?
-prediction was long since verified.
"The same is true of a far other
-states. Is Yirjrini:v, where about
Bixty-five percent of the populat ion
are farmers," land is worth about
