The legislature of Oregon, that
lias jnt convened at its reg
ular - bienniel session, Bays
West Shore, will he called upon
to enact the most important legis
lation demanded of any legislatrurt?
since Oregon became a state, and
the people have a natural interest
iixJkprtwing something about the
men to whom such vital interests
.re entrusted. Upon examination,
it appears that there are twenty
three republicans and seven demo
crats in the senate and Forty-two
republicans and eighteen democrats
in the house, giving the republicans
a majority of forty on a joint ballot.
The eigruneanee of this is that it
insures the election of a republican
successor to Senator Mitchell and
. renders the republican par t v wholly
"responsible for the legislation of the
session, since it has two-thirds ma
jority in each house. Seperatedinto
groups, there are twenty-nine farm
ers and stock raisers, nineteen mer
chants, fifteen attorneys, eight
manufacturers, four bankers, four
physicians, two real estate dealers,
two mechanics, one accountant and
one school teacher. This shows a
fretty fair representation of the
fading business elements' of the
.state, and augurs well for the pass
age of enlightened legislation. The
j youngest member of the senate is
.Jeff Mvers, of Scio, and of the house
W. E.Thomas, of Portland. The
'-oldest member of the senate is J. C.
Carson, of Portland, and of the
liouse John Minto, ef -Salem. Mr.
flyers and Mr. Minto are respec
tively the youngest and oldest in
"the entir body. Less than one-third
of them hava been members of pre-,
vious legislatures, and are to that
veitent free from the unprogrefsive
spirit of their predecessors. Nine
only are of foreign birth, nine of
"the others being natives of Oregor .
The Farmers' Alliance is becom
ing a political factor that will make
: it-self felt btfore another presiden
tial election. An official enumer
ation of the membership was un
dertaken last July, which estimates
:the number belonging to the organ
station at 1,258,500. The Alliance
.is semi-secret in its workings and
Vbars certain trades and professions
iroin membership. The inel gible
Masses are bankers, rr.e-chante,
ibrokers, commission dealers, buyers
of cottoH, grain and produce, law
yers, city doctors, preachers and
chool teachers, land and book
- agents, canvassers, liverymen, spec
ulators and gamblers. Politicians
of every political hue view with
tastomshment the giant strides of
this rapidlj'-growing organization.
Some wily politicians are trustii g
to Bome Hntoward circumstances o
produce a rupture in the ranks,
. and thus continue tie old
parties in power. Editors of some
of the great political dailies are
hired, like the prophet Balaam, tr
. curse the advancing host, but stil"
the tide of enthusiasm sweepe
across the country an4 promises t
melt into one party the various
elements of reform. It is very
natural that those who have been
denied membership should fail to
see an3 thing good in the platform
V of th Alliance, and consequently
NfcUtTik it an inexcusable oversight
that would exclude them from the
counsels of the organization. Al
ready the Alliance has elected the
candidates for governor in Georgia.
South - Carolina and Tennessee.
There will be forty-four Alliance
men in the new congress.
Petitions have been circulated
throughout the State, asking the
legislature to pass a pharmaceuti
cal law. We need a law regulating
druggists and stpotheearieg. Vt
want an examining board and wc
ant druggists and their clerks to
belicensed just as in Eastern States.
A druggist 6houkl have a more
thorough knowledge of medicine
than a doctor, so that if the latter
make. a mistake or prescribe ai
overdose of some dangerous drug
he may be able to correct the mis
take. There seem te be fewer re
strietions upon the drug business
in this country than upon any
other calling, It is too frequently
the case that boys and young men
sweep out drug stores and clean
cuspidors fir a few weeks, an?
pose as full-Hedged druggists. As
the business is now conducted in
some parts of the country, no
sooner does the novice learn to dis
tinguish between vini gallici and
crot n oil than he is ready to dis
pense drugs. A little legislation
in the matter Would not be amiss.

The ingenious, mercenary devices
of the true jockey afford an inter
esting and not unprofitable study
to those who have cows to sell or
horses to buy. The way that Pome
poor victims sweat at a bargain
under the engineering ability of
men who drive sharp bargains, is
quite beyond our comprehension.
It would bo well if harm stopped
here. But this huckstering spirit
is leprous to character. It beast
ializes; it breaks down tk trader's

ours. The man who will school
himself into the adoption of all
manner of disguisements about the
horse he has to sell, will adopt the
same artifices and quibbles about
the opinions he wishes to force
upon 3-our acceptance. Let him
mend his ways by showing all the
spavins in the next horse he has to
sail (there will be some or he would
not sell) and his reformation is not
altogether hopeless.
The election of Oregon's United
States Senator will occur on Tues
day, Jan. 20, at 12 o'clock in each
house of the legislature separately,
and each day thereafter at 12 M.
in joint convention. The election
of Hon. J. II. Mitchell on the first
ballot is conceded. A joint caucus
of the republican members veted
unanimously to re-elect Senator
Mitchell. a
