was in Ijebanon this week. Mr. Shaek
leford is a practical tanner, and if he
ctn dispose of his prowrty in Craw
fordsville he irtimated very strongly
that he would build a tannery in our

W. D. Washburn of Brownsville was
in town Friday. He was ordered to
lay a walk in front of his lots on Hiatt
street, but after making inquiry lit
found that although his property is
near the heart of the town, that he
was outside of the corporation. Isn't
it atout time to extend our corporate
limits?
Died, in Lebanon, Doc. 1st, Mabel
Hyde, aged 12 years and 9 months.
She will be missed in the 'Sabbath
school, of which she was a regular at
tendant, but it is a consolation to know
that she has gone to enjoy an eternal
Sabbath with that "innumerable com
pany" and with the Father of our
spirits. The parents have the sympa
thy of the entire community.
The S. P. Co. are reixrted to have
said that if the mine-holders on the
Santiam would furnish live car-loads
of ore daily that they would extend
the Lebanon branch road to Quartz
ville. The conditions are reasonable
and there need be no barrier in the
way of extending the road, as this
amount of ore could be shipped easily
at a profit to the railroad company and
yet leave a large margin to the miners.
Lebanon has been very fortunate
thus far inasmuch as we "have never
had any destructive fires; but this fact
should, instead of causing a general
feeling of security, suggest to our cit
izens the necessity of precautionary
measures. If our tire engine is not in
trood condition, if the hose is lacking
in any respect, the Council should see
that all our appliances for battling
with the flames are equal to any emer
gency of this nature.
The Brownsville Times says that
Mr. Banks has returned from Tacoma
with alout fifteen men and will work
in the Blue River mines this winter.
The Tacoma company have but re
cently acquired property in these
mines, but the diligence with which
they have entered upon the work of
developing their claims, together with
the opinion which the foreman, Mr.
Banks, expressed in regard to these
mines is inspiring to the lvikewarm
and faithless.
About 4 P. M. Wednesday, fire broke
out in the upper story of the city hall.
Th? fire company was called out and
the fire was with some difficulty
checked; not, however, until the hall
was badly damaged. It is not neces
sary to add any comments, as every
one knows just "what is lacking in the
fire department, and we trust that any
deficiency in hose or other appurte
nances will be made good before
another fire occurs. The origin of the
fire is unknown.
