Hut, t?!ivs the radical, T nm not
yoing to uproot good things, but
only what is evil. I want to pot
the' poison oaks and buckeyes out
rf the woods ami give the lire oaks
and walnuts a better chance. I
want to uproot the tans that they
may not choke the wheat. Your
object ia a good ne ami your plaits
are praiseworthy if you know just
Low. to do it. liut sometimes it is
a hazardous operation. You have
read, of course, the parable of the
tares and the wheat. The servants
of the householder were radicals.
When they saw the tares 'they
wanted to pluck them up by the
roots, but the wiser householder,
who was the Lord himself, would
not suffer this. Nothing requires
more risdom and grace than up
rooting the evil that is in the world.
The man who starts out Don Quix
ote like, Buying, 4iI nm a born rad
ical, whenever I see a poison oak
or a tare I must go for it," will
probably run about as brilliant a
career in reforming the world as
did Peter the Hermit when he or
ganised the crusades. The fanner
tlws a ereat deal of uprooting. To
cut oif the tops of weeds don't do
much food. You must, if possible,
get the lust fibre out of the 'soil.
Then there are weeds that will
yrovr again if the finest filament is
loft in the soil. 15ut the Itible tells
m of two kinds of radicalism
nbout rooting as well as uprooting.
The true radical must first of all
see that he himself is rooted. He
as to build as well as destroy. He
3a is to dig up in order that he may
plant. Paul, writing to the Fphe
eians, describes the gospel reformer
in three words, "rooted in love."
Xo man can begin the work of rad
icalism or .uprooting until he tirst
begins with himself. He must see
o it that his zeal is according to
love. He must fight the devil
ais Michael the archangel did,
spaying, "The Ixrd rebuke thee."
2'aul was the prince f radicals,
-vet he tells us tl at he besruight
where real estate im-.ts with n
bound. Hundreds of new eilies
have, sprung up with a growth that
is perfectly astonishing, and sudden
fortunes liave Wen made in real
estate. Land values must continue
to increase generally, because the
available area of land in the conn
try is now eo tunall as to render
inevitable its entire absorption in
a few years. One hundred years
from now, at the present rate of
increase, our poouIAtion will be
four hundred to the square mile
twice as many as in the largest
European nations. To lib a safe
speculator, it is necessary to study
cause and elVcct. There must be a
solid basis for a land bo'im, how
ever, or it will inevitably result in
a crash, entailing great losses ami
subsequent injurious depression.
Two thousand dollars per front foot
for land in some cities might be a
judicious investment, in others,
very indiscreet. It is wise to make
investments of a character indicat
ing permanent, if slower, growth
and increase of value. Fortunately
for Oregon, it lus no towns or cities
of the mushroom type of growth.
Speaking generally, we believe that
landed investments are amply se
cured, and that the resources of our
country, both hidden and developed,
will make of the Pacific Northwest
the grandest and richest portion of
America's domain.

"St knows but little of the patience

to fight the devil with the came

result is that there is immense ex

in northern Ohio. There had never

On the dav of the funeral good old

I think it is, and I'm going to quit."
And he did. That was gospel rad

that I cadoise.
