Winter once more calls forth our en
ergy to renewed life and purjMW, the
question arlsex In my mind, how are
we Christian going to employ this
energy? And In whut way can we liest I
serve our Lord ami Muster? There l
work for each nnd ex'ery one of us, and
there la abundant energy for the work,
If only that energy be directed In the
right course.
Kvery yenr, what vast stores of en
ergy are expended In the giving of
'church ftilVs, dinners, supper, etn.
For day, weeks, and even month,
the ladies of the chureh will be busy
making all manner of fancy articles
to be sold, often going to expense
which they can ill nfl'ord, while they
neglect home duties and the comfort
of those depending on them. and
too often driving husband and chil
dren farther from the church, instead
of attracting them to it. I hen come
the final preparations. There are
committees to be appointed, plana for
making the most money at the lwwt
expense to be carefully laid and exe
cuted, a vast amount of cooking to
be done, tables to be arranged, all
manner of salable (and unsalable)
articles to be Uinplaved to the best
advantage, manv odd bits of work to
be finished at the last moment, a host
of side-games to be contrived and put
into competent hands, costumes to
be made, and a thousand and one
things to be done, making my head
swim to think of the half. Home ia
neglected entirely now. Utile ones
are put off with hasty words by
mothers taxed beyond endurance.
There is a general hurry and confu
sion. The eventful evening arrives
The ladiei are at their respective
posts, with smiling faces, tired feet
and worried minds. I hildnm are
running and plaving, with no one to
look after them, laying up colds and
waywardness for the days to follow.
There are strangers present, with no
one to make them acquainted or to
render the evening enjoyable to them
in anv wav, those whoso interest it
is to entertain Wing in a perfect ma4
of work. There are young people,
with no one to direct their amuse
ments; young men, who, for the sake
of appearance and from a force
brought to bear upon them which no
young man with any pride or sensi
tiveness can withstand, feel obliged
to spend much more than ihey can
really afford (other young men stay
ing away, not being able to anoni a
church fair, and resorting to a game
of cards or some other less expensive
imusement.) There are bright young
misses, with winning smiles and
'twentv-hvo cents here and "twenty-
five cents" there. There is everything
from a buttonhole bouquet to a
baby show. Articles are sold at a
price far exceeding their market value ;
many of them, too, being useless to
he purchaser. Hut all this is consid
ered riht, because it is "for tht
church."
The festivities may end with an
auction, to disjwse of cakes, candies
etc., left on hand : or else a lunch if
given on the following day. Some
times even rattling is resorted to, it:
