Amusements in moderation are

but amusements in excess vitiate
the whole nature, and is a thing to
be guarded against. Not long since
a friend said to us that he had been
completely surfeited with amuse
ment and that he could no-longer
find enjoyment in anything of that
nature. Nothing can be more hurt
ful to a youth than to have his soul
sodden with pleasure. The best
qualities of mind are thus frittered
away; common enjoyments become
tasteless; his appetite for the high
est kind of pleasure is satiated and
exhausted; and when he comes to
face the work and the duties tof life,
the result is often only aversion and
disgust. Fast men soon waste and
exhaust the powers f life, and dry
p the very sources of true happi
ness. They have forestalled their
spring, and can produce no healthy
growth of either character or intel
lect. A child without simplicity, a
maiden without innocence, a boy1
without truthfulness, are not more
piteous si- hts than the man who
has wasted and thrown awav his
youth in pleasure. It is amongst
uch persons especially, . whose
youth hag been sullied by prema
ture enjoyments, that we find that
prevalence of skepticism, sneering
and egotism, which prove a soured
nature. Having abused the sources
of lif, and thrown away their
youth, they are tempted in their
despair to throw their manhood
after it. Injury of this kind, in
ilicted on the character, is most
lifficult to be repaired," for the

lions. A little exemjjlary teaching
would do much toward bringing

sides, Christians could then de
nounce the sin of Sabbath desecra
tion with much better grace.
ESSENTIALS TO HAPPINESS.
Wealth, station, applause, lux
ury, whicli are so often sought, are
not necessary to liappiness; they
often minister to it, but it can le
had without them. Health is more
essential, though there are some
happy invalids. A moderate sup
ply of the physical comforts of life
seems needful, though happiness
" and poverty have dwelt together.
The' exercise of our faculties in
some useful, and, if possible, con
genial direction, is a large contrib
utor. Idleness and overwork are
both disastrous to happiness. Suc
cessful endeavor of every rightful
kind, obedience to the voice of con
science, the love and help we give,
are all ministering influences.

FACULTY OF DISCRIMINATION.
Instead of burdening the mem
ory with technicalities, Christ pro
vided for the quickening of the
moral faculty in man, and thus, iti
spiritual things, acted in relation
to the human soul as in temporal
things God had done. God gives
manpower to get products out of
the soil; but instead of saying this
must be eateu and that must be
refused, lie gives the power, call it
instinct or reason, which saves him
who rightly uses it from noxious
plants and animals. It was better
to give the faculty of discrimina
tion than to label all
te products
of the earth. A spirit is better
than a catalogue. There are few
things more remarkable in life than
man's instinct by which he discov
ers what to eat. Every day he is
called upon to choose, even so far
as the body is concerned, between
Lite and death. The life of the
body is exposed to constant risk.
In nearly every field there are roots
or leaves which might injure or
even destroy . the " health of the
body; yet man. contrives to make a
selection adapted to his nature.
These poisonous roots are like so
many temptations; they are to the
body what vices are to the soul;
yet speatcing generally, man is su
perior to them, he refuses if not
resists, and saves himself. How is
this? Is there not a spirit in man,
and does not the inspiration of th
Almightv give him understanding?
How has God provided for material
civilization? By the spirit which
is in man. In the same way has
Christ provided for intellectual ex
pansion and growth. When Christ
opened the eyes of the blind, He
did not require to create another;
universe that the vision might
nave another object to rest upon;
the universe was there waiting to
be looked at. So the universe of
truth has existed from the bejrin-
ning, ana as there are some dark
fields of knowledge to.be explored,
some intricate problems to solve,
he has promised the spirit to guide
men into ail truth; emphatically
to gume men, ine very word im
plying difficulty, danger, and new
evolutions and combinations; not
only to guide, but to guide' into all;
truth; not some departments, but
into all; not into external views of
truth, hut into its very essence, so
that n-.on might know truth under
every disguise, and be able to elim
inate it from every sophistry and
every heresy.
