The new city ordinance requiring
feverv man to clean the street in front
of bis door, may prove arduous to
those not industriously inclined, but it
is a god law, nevertheless.
Since work began on the basement
of the paper mill a stone quarry has
been opened near town and we find
that there is an excellent quality of
building stone near at hand.
Hiram Powel called at the Kxpkkss
office this week. He tells ns that in
sinking a well on his farm between
this place and Brownsville he struck
some very good coal crop pings.
At a regular meeting of the Lebanon
literary Society on Monday evening,
the old and vexed question of woman
suffrage was discussed, which resulted
in the loss of the ballet to her ladyship.
Our communications on some of the
prevailing vices of the day have sev
eral times heen intermitted from lack
of space. We publish a very trench
' ant article this week which all should
read.
F. P. Bod well, who lives six miles
east of Lebanon, reports the finding of
several nuggeta of gold in a ditch on
his farm. The source of the metal, if
not already found, will be discovered
re long.

L. C. Rice, of Hamilton creek, was
subpoenaed lately as a witness in some
case in Harney valley; going as far as
Albany, be ascertained that the sum
mons was illegal and returned to his
home the next day.
Our young friends, O. P. Coshow, Jr.,
and J. R. Wyatt, were admitted to the
bar recently. If these young men do
not rise high in the legal profession,
we Khali be disappointed in them.
Several of our readers called for our

In our last issue we said "that the
Oregon Presbytery of the C. P. church
would convene this week. We were
wrongly informed. Presbytery will
convene on Thursday next preceding
the fourth Sunday In October.
An Eastern man who has traveled
extensively In search of a good home,
concluded after stopping a few days in
Lebanon to locate In this part of the
State. He Is expected to return from
Washington with two sons-in-law
about Nov. 1.
James Smith, who Is just down from
the Santiam mines, reports a number
of men at work. He says a small in
terest in one of the mines in that dis
trict sold recently for 2500. The com
pany have refused $50,000 for the en
tire claim.
Elsewhere in this paper It will be
seen that one Mr. Zinc took unto him
self a life partner. Notwithstanding
Zinc is is a stubborn metal and fuses at
high temperature, we are assured
that the two hearts were melted Into
one on last Sunday.
F. M. Miller's family were the victims
of a surprise party on last Saturday
evening. A number of friends gathered
on this occasion to enjoy the company
of the Judge's family, who left three
days later. The meeting was voted a
very pleasant affair.

An unpleasantness occurred this
week at the St. Charles between Lynn
Walton and Sam Chinaman. The
kicking administered by Walton was
assessed at $3. Sam was arrested on a
charge of assault, but the court held
that a Chinese fan flirtation could not
be construed into an assault with a
deadly weapon and Sam was remanded
back to the kitchen.
A friend of ours -recently overheard
conversation between two elderly
ladies just returned from the industrial
exposition at Portland. Both expressed
themselves well pleased with the er
position In general, but oue of them
was sorely displeased with the music
played by the Liberati band: her
harshest criticism was that "they
played nothing but French aud Ital
Ian."
A few days since we received a very
polite (?) card from an old subscriber
stating that he did not want the Ex
press. The old sponging parasite Is
just about as reasonable as the man
who chewed credit beef for two years
and settled his account by saying that
he didn't want any more beef from
that shop. My friend, your strange
dislike to the paper Is easily inter
preted. Your bill is $4.
Occasionally we hear of large yields
of corn in the valley, as we also ave
occasional crops of very fine peaches,
but to iufer from this, that this portion
of the valley can rival Iowa in the
growth of corn would be foolish; and to
say that this section of country out
ranks New Jersey In peach growing is
madness. We have the best country In
theworld, but we cannot guarantee for
the middle Willamette valley a certain
or satisfactory crop either of corn or
peaches.
Montague tnrjnt be preparing for a
boom, fudging by the way he is stock
ing np his Mammoth and One-Price

A few years ago we were told or

only in other States, but in Oregon
require attention and cultivation In
order to succeed well in bearing.- After
a few years more of the careless method
of orchard treatment as at present
practiced we shall see but little sound
fruit in Oregon.

Literary Society.
At a meeting of the Lebanon Liter
ary Society on Monday evening, Oct.
Rev. G. 8. Hanlelter was elected
president, M. A. Miller vice president.
Mrs. A. Marcelius secretary, and W.C.
Peterson treasurer. The question for
discussion, although a hackneyed one,
was discussed with much warmth and
enthusiasm. An interesting and va
ried program, suited to the diversified
talent of the members, will be an
nounced one week in advance, so that
all who are connected with the society
may be entertained and edified. We
hope that every one who hopes to be
benefitted by the Institution will feel
that the success of the society depends
In great measure upon Individual ef
fort. Let there be a general awakening
among all classes. The society meets
at the Santiam Academy, Monday
evening next, at 7:80. By consent af
the leaders of the debate of Monday
night next, the question will be, "Re
solved, that the U. 8. Government
should pass a law prohibiting the sale
and manufacture of ardent spirits."

A few days since we were standing
at our office window assorting our
quarts specimens, when a man with
stomach capacity of a two-stamp
quarts mill, and who was evidently
suffering the pangs of hunger, missed
the City restaurant by two doors and
ordered lunch at the Express office.
Our mind was wholly absorbed In our
mineral collection, and In our mental
abstraction we mistook him for the
latest-Improved quarts crusher, and
began to ply him with questions relat
ing to his capacity, etc., at the same
time exhibiting some ore that bristled
ith pyrites of Iron, we asked how
much he could Vulverize In twenty-
four hours. This impersonation of a
quartz mill looked discomfited and
closed the door with a bang, leaving a
half-finished apology iu our editorial
room which will puzzle the uext tramp
to interpret.

our ears as with an auger, aud renders
it almost an Impossibility to write.

are furnishing music for us, that your
numerous auditory Is absent.
A Poor Advertisement.
A man who recently rode on the O.
P. R. from Mill City, says that passen
gers on the train killed numbers of
birds of foreign plumage, and that a
man who was stationed on the for
ward car would jump off, bag the game
and climb aboard the rear car. This
may be a good record for the fowler,
but if it Is meant as a railroad adver
tisement it fails of its purpose. We
can call to mind a railroad we shall
mention no names lest we provoke
jealousy the trains on which have
been chasing the above-described bird
for eleven years, and the nearest they
have ever come to sighting it was the
discovery of tracks two days old.

Portland people were justly Indig
nant at the way the census enumerator
treated tbem; Salem's citizens felt a
little sore after the same manner, but
the climacteric point was not reached
In this farcical affair until it was
known that one-third of Tallman's
population had been omitted from the
count. When one reflects that Tall-
man's corporate limits touch Albany
on the west, Lebanon on the east,
and but hard against Spicer on the
north, we think you will join us in a
cry that shall be heard even in the City
of Magnificent Distances.

A great many people fall to under
stand why small county papers should
cost more thau some of the large East
ern papers or some of the ponderous
newspapers published on this wast.
If you are a wagon maker you readily
understand why you cannot compete
with Fish Bros., or Bain, In the man
ufacture of wagons; or if you are a
shoemaker you know very well that
you cannot with your hands compete
with Eastern manufacturers who em
ploy hundreds of hands aud use the
latest and most approved machinery.
Perhaps this knowledge will help you
to understand why our little four-page
papers come higher than some of the
newsprpcra which It takes a whole
day to read. The tendency of the
times is for combinations and trusts to
crowd out the single-handed manufac
turer and mechanic. You see at once
that If you had a patronage sufficient
for the patronage is the measure of
your ability you could sell as cheap
as they. Give the country paper a few
hundred thousand subscribers, a few
millions annually for advertisements
and a thousand dollars over the coun
ter every day for pay locals, before you
complain of a high subscrlptlou or a
worthless sheet.

Brownsville, Oct. 4.
Once again we send a few items. A.
Banks and two other expert miners
from Taeoma arrived In Brownsville
last night en route to the Calapooia
mines to open up some one mine in
that district. They have the money
to back them. They have engaged the
services of your correspondent as guide,
and by the time you have this lu print
we will be In the mines. If the mines
come up fb their expectations they will
soon have a railroad to the mines, as
some of the wealthy ones of Tacoma
are members of the company.
The clans or Standlsh will gather at
the Lucky Boy mine this week. They
have adopted Joe Moore into the clan.
Joe will petition the I legislature to
have bis name changed to Standlsh,
also Nasby. They are a noble clan,
and I wish them good luck and that
they may strike It rich In the Lucky
Boy, as they deserve It, being the pio
neers of the camp; and when you
their banner on the outer wall of the
Hotel De Lucky, you may be sure of a
welcome such as the noble Moore only

The Chinaman has been called by
many opprobrious names; he has been
charged with having committed nearly
every crime known to common and
statutory law, and is said to be desti
tute of the moral sensibilities, but he
is not au In grate, as the following will

St. Charles, became Involved In a fra
cas this week that threatened his lib
erties and the loss of a few shekels. 8.
M. Garland, bis attorney, having ex
t Heated him from his difficulty, his
gratitude knew no bounds; he threw
his arms about the attorney's neck and
squeezed him most lovingly. Now, it
must be remembered that a China
man's gratitude knows no sex, color
or previous condition of servitude, aud
consequently the landlady was the
next victim of his loving embrace. The
lady waiters being constitutionally
opposed to such demonstrations, eluded
his grasp, whereupon the Chinaman
clinched a lamp pest with such fury
that a flame of natural gas several
inches In length escaped from the top
of the beam.

The McKanlass minstrel troupe will
give entertrtaluments at Glaze's hall
uext Friday and Saturday evenings.
It Is said that money Is scarce here,
but there seems to be plenty of money to
gamble on. at least the faro banks are
well patronized.
The showers of rain that have fallen
this week have been worth thousands
of dollars to this county. Enough rain
fell to start the gauss to growing and
fall range will be good.
Usually at this season of the year
there ia considerable typhoid fever in
tills section, but so far this fall there
have been comparatively few cases.
Some of the farmers were not through
threshing when the rain came this
week; their grain was stacked, hence
was not materially damaged.
Bruce Hcaley replenished our larder
this week with a cabbage head which
weighed 21 llts. and a dozen potatoes
whose aggregate weight was 13 pounds.
We don't know whether Mr. Healey
makes a practice raising such mam
moth vegetables on his Trout crtek
farm, but if he does, his products will
certainly compare with those of any
locality in the State.
There may be persons In this com
munity who are at times troubled with
colic, or subject to attacks of bowel
complaint. It so, they should try
