CHSISfT CALL TO EEPENTANCE.
'The "sintrfcrs" alone could hear the
call of Christ. . This is true in civili

il.in it eonsolidlvted the moral con

to.be expecteil that a great division
wmild follow the cry, and that hence
forth a marked line would show the
pacc occupied by those "who trusted
ill tiieaelvi that they were right
eous and despised others." The call
of Christ was the instrument of elec
tion, pointing out those upon whom
it coul 1 produce the intended effect.
All calls to other life, good or bad,
hsive in them of necessity an effective
principle, simply because they sep
arate and classify men. Christ acted
in this matter precisely as sensible
inev act under similar conditions;
they turn from those who do not
want them, and work with those who
appreciate their purpose. The nature
of the call determines the nature of
the society that will be summoned by
it. Christ uttered a call which plainly
' said that men needed to change their
course, and it was natural that such
men alone should draw around hiro,
that they might learn all that he
meant with refereuee to the future.
To any man conscious of want, or
. iu, or ignorance, the call to repent-.tiii-e
i t be very call moat suited to
him. Ingfwad o! turning hi la into
. o'.spair, it givca him hope; it shows
that an opportunity is still left, and
that one man at least is willing to
point out how that -.opportunity may

MINISTERIAL CONVENTION.
The following ministers of the Evan

vention on Tuesday evening, Aug. 28,
at the Evangelical church at Salem:
C C Polling, J M Ballentine, O L
Hanes, D V Polling, J Bowersox, F J
Strayer, Thos A Yt, E S Ballinger
and C M Plowm.-.n.
CC Polling preached the opening
sermon. Tne inspiration of the Bible
was tho theme.
.One feature of the convention was
not announced on the programme, and
so it was a cheerful surprise to the
members of the convention to enter
the elegant home of Geo F Smith and
find about seventy-five friends and
members awaiting them in the parlors.
The evening was spent most pleasantly
by all present, and the ministers of the
Oregon conference will look upon this
occasion as a bright spot in this confer
ence year.
The convention was properly organ
ized ou Wednesday evening by elect
ing C C Polling president and J M
Ballentine secretary.
The work of the dy was done with
despatch, all questions evoking inter
esting discussion. The periods were
interspersed with good music, D. V.
Polling being a regular artist with
organ and voice to lead music during
such an occasion.
The work of the convention closed
Wednesday night. All were pleased
vith theirilteridance and will be glad
to return to Salem again,

PAST AND PRESENT.
A few - sentimental croakers
among us are fond of .bewailing our
present comparative degradation,
whil exalting the finer qualities of
old medteval tunes. They profess
to lament the time when gas and
oil were unknown, and when pine
wood torches or rudely-moulded
candles gave all the light that was
needed. But the record of olden
times is a sad one. Stained with
blood and wet with tears, darkened
by ignorance and overlaid by
superstitions, defaced by tyranny
and ever v where in a state of unrest
and lawlessness, it has only its po-
etic aspect to recommend it.
What we arc now. with our
shrieking steam engines and vol
umes of black smoke, our leaders
of industry and our armies of
workers, our equal laws and abo
lition of privileges, is a thousand
times better than in those old he
roic times which poets delight to
honor and painters to beautify. If
the good of the race be the great
: object of the human family, we
have done far more towards that
desired end than in the days when
knights went capering through the
pathless forest and over the untilled
plains in search for adventures of
a war-like kind. Our African exr
plorers, who have no more romantic
object in view than to bag big game
or to open a new market for goods,
are of far more value to the world
than the hordes of titled men who
have meandered through the pages
of romance; and the despised fac
tory chimney is a sign of greater
glory than the shield hung up by
the side of some siek-brained chev
alier eager for fight
e have to go on, not to go back,
and victories of life lie on the ho
rizon before us, not in the grave
behind us. Art and science ouzht
to lend serenity and dignity to life,
and progress means wealth and
comfort and security.
We seem to have four kinds of
people those who are moving for
ward, those who are on the move
back, those who are standing still,
and those whare going to stait in
some direction seam.
