In regard to closings, there are many
and varied forms, from the heretofore
chilling' "yours truly" to the many as
surances of loving friends. 1 say "here
tofore chilling," because forms of "yours
trul v" are now used as formulas denot
ing great attachment or sincerity,
whereaB no me years ago this ending
found its chief employment In business
letters.
Usage takes on many forms in this
matter of endtnsr. Some would close
with a few appropriate words which
have no connection with what has al
ready preceded; others make a connec
tion. The words "with best wishes"
and "with kindest regards' make very
graceful endings, but are fitting only
when the parties exchange few letters
or are not close friends.
Where no connection is made between
the preceding clause and the concluding
phrase, such expressions as: "Most af
fectionately," "ever your loving
friend," or "believe me very much your
friend," make up for any seeming ab
ruptness. One of the chief characters
tlca of a letter Is the manner in which it
Is closed. The formulas have changed.
and are chanrlmr not so much In form
as in appliance in late years. Many
which used to Indicate only the closest
degrees of friendship are now used on
occasions where there Is only a slight
acquaintance, and often in a case where
the writer wishes only to show esteem
for his or her correspondent.
Expressions which are used thus in
discriminately are ''sincerely yours,"
"very sincerely your friend," etc., etc
Of a packet of twenty-three letters writ
ten mostly by different persons and
within the last four years, I find that
ten use nearly the same forms of "sin
cerely yours." I have chosen this packet
because they were not written as
from friends of long standing; where
there are several from one person there
is quite an interval of time between the
several letters. In two of them "af
fectionately" was used, and one, a model !
of elegance from a New York City home,
the words "lovingly yours" appear.
Such endings used in such connections
indicate not the degree of friendship
existing between the writer and the cor
respondent, but the state of mind or sin
cerity of the writer. One of the most
beautiful letters I ever received con
tained these words, which I had never
seen before that time: "I am very cor
dially your friend, .
When "very truly," "very sincerely,"
etc, are used, the words "I am" and "I
remain" are a great help in destroying
any abrupt effect, and they give the
letter a tone semi-polite, semi-affectionate.
Now. as to signing the name. In
every case it is best to sign the full
name, by which 1 mean the Christian
name, initial of middle name and sur
name. Only between relatives and very
intimate friends is any diminutive of
the proper name allowable, and I should
be loath to recommend the practice even

How the Faraar's Little Daughter Ukrd
Soda- Water.
A lady who was passing the summer
in the country at a farm some miles from
town on eday took the little daughter of
a farmer in her phaeton when she had
occasion to drive to a village bait a
dozen miles away, says the Boston
Courier. The child, who had never be
fore been there, was at once amazed and
delighted with all the novel sights
which presented themselves to her eyes,
and the lady found not a little amus
mentin the naive comments which the
farmer's daughter made.
Before starting for home the lady took
the child Into a shop and orde-ed a glass
of soda-water for her. The child, who
had no idea at all what this strange
liquid might be, watched with closest
attention while the attendant made the
sirup foam in the glass, and when it was
given to her she bravely set her small
Irown nose into the shining froth, al
though she did not seem to find much
satisfaction in the drink nntil she came
to the sweet sirup at the bottom.
"Well, Aramlnta, the lady asked, as
the child set down the glass with a sigh
f satisfaction, "how did you like your
soda-water?"
Dh, thank you, marm," was the an
swer of the novice; "I liked the soda-
water first-rate after I got through the
suds."

Snitrins; Larks.
The Paris correspondent of the Lon
don Graphic gives an account of the sys
tem of hypnotizing employed by its
foremost professor in France, Dr. Luys,
director of the Eevue de Hypnoogie,
the organ of the science. The process
was suggested to him by one that is
used by bird-catchers. It is the revolv
ing mirror that Dr. Luys employs the
same as that used in the Seld for snar
ing larks and the effect produced is an
identical one. "The advantage of my
system," he says, "is that by means of
it one BinRle operator can fascinate at
one and the same time an unlimited
number of patients without trouble to
himself, and with no loss of force. It
has also the advantage of absolute infal
libility. I have never known it to faiL

ceptible to its effects than others; but
none have ever resisted five or six op
erations. On th other hand, most suc
cumb the very first time, after a lapse
of from five to thirty minutes.
The system is as simple as it can be.
In the middle of a group of "patients,"
which may be as large or as small as the
operator may determine, is set up on a
stand and on a level with the eyes a

more common practice than may at first

many a lesson of duplicity is learned
with fatal permanence. To this habit
of insincere admiration may be traced
the fact that so many people grow np
with so little real and sound thought of
their own, with so little true apprecia
tion ot beauty, with so little power of
discrimination and judgment. They
have become so accustomed to adopt the
ideas of others, and to retail them as
their own, that they take but little
pains to cultivate any for themselves.
To extol a popular author serves them
Instead of studying him; to praise the
picture that all are praising seems to
them easier and safer than to try to
discriminate tor themselves. Indeed,
any true representation of themselves
ttrikes them as too tame and insipid to
give it utterance, and so duplicity and
deterioration react upon each other.
There is no true development without
sincerity, and there can be no sincerity

An Item Sntirestlve to Every Community
In the Land.
The news that Mr. Georjre M. Pull
man has offered to erct a monument to
commemorate the massacre of 1813 at
the point in Chicago where it has been
definitely ascertained that Fort Dear
born stood, should be a suggestive item
to every community in the land. There
are few sections of the country which
have not been the scene of stirring, or
at least interesting historical events.
The Central West is full of locations
where Indian fighting, renowned in his
tory, occurred. These points can now
be readily ascertained and permanently
marked at slight expense. Another
generation will find it difficult to do
this. There were many sites of forts
which figured in the civilization of
the West as prominently as Fort Dear
born. All Western cities of importance
have grown up around such fortifications
as this. At the East there are points
that can yet be identified upon the bat
tlefields of the revolution, and houses
which are still standing and known to
have been the headquarters of notable
commanders. There are ruins of forti
fications, both of 1770 and 1813, which
can be plainly traced at various points
along the Eastern coast. But, in ad'
dition to those which are still visible.
there are countless spots of most inter
esting and important history which
can readily be found and thoroughly
identified. The mysteries ot the
Indian mounds should incite the pres
ent generation to preserve American
history. Until recently these matters
have not attracted much gen
eral attention. They richly deserve
National consideration. The exact lo
calities of great events in which either
the armies of civilization or the armies
which fought our wars took patt are
rapidly becoming lost both to sight and
to memory. A very little public spirit
and a small amount of research by local
historical societies would at once rescue
from the teeming past the history and
exact position of thousands of spots
which, in all coming years, would In
terest and instruct our millions. Those
who have driven over the road from
Boston through Lexington to Concord
will appreciate what can easily be done
to preserve the history of important
localities and make it familiar to all
passers. The granite tablets by the
roadside, which tell of . all phases
of those days which show on the birth
places of our independence, add an in
terest to the drive which nothing else
could give it. The brief inscriptions
make it possible to repeople these his
toric spots with the actors of those
patriotic days and scenes which sur
rounded them. It would be a work
worthy of any community to thus mark
and permanently preserve the points of
its local history. There will never
come a time when such monuments will
lose their value. In fact, as the years
pass and the Nation grows in extent and
population and power, such monuments
will grow proportionately in interest

Ala, in the Tyrol, and tnt home again.
The contagiousness of phthisis has
been recognized in Germany by mili
tary command. An edict has gone forth
from the War Minister that the evest
of every soldier shall be examined once
a month. It it does not measure
enough, and does not expand with drill
and athletic exercises, he is dismissed
from the army as being predisposed to
Dhthisis and likely to infect his com
rades.
Angora-goat farming is perhaps the
most important and profitable industry
of the Tasmanian farmer. This indus
try was introduced into Tasmania forty
years ago, and mohair first appeared as
an export ten years later, the quantity
shinned being 1,03d pounds. In 1875
the clip reached 1,157,000 pounds, val
ued at 5000,000, while in 1887 7,154,000
pounds of hair were exported, valued at
over one million dollars (the price of
the hair having been much reduced by
this time), besides skins to the value of
$500,000.

The present vicar of Melton-Mow
bray, England, has discontinued a ven
erable custom. By an old charter the
vicar ot this parish is authorized to sit
in the church at a specified time and at
a specified table, and collect twopence
from every married parishioner and
threepence from every unmarried par
ishioner. He also has a similar claim
on every drove of cattle entering the
parish. The late vicar enforced these
claims, but the present vicar, Mr. Kar
nav. has decided to let them drop.
A Novel Rat :x terminator.
A novel method of ridding steam
boats ot rodents has been successfully
tested at Pittsburgh. The youngest son
of the captain of a river steamer was
some time ago presented with a pair
of spotted snakes, which, as they were
perfectly harmless, were deposited in
the hull of the boat until tbey could be
conveniently housed. A few days ago
a great commotion was noticed among
the rats, which always infest steamboats
and barges in great numbers, and hun
dreds of them were observed scampering
ashore on the hand-spring and Stern
lines. The evacuation continued all
night, and in the morning the captain
found 'both snakes dead, having been
literally torn to pieces by the infuriated
animals, but not one of the latter was
found on the boat.
