    SOUTHERN RACE TROUBLES.
There niv three di8tinet causes of
'irritation' nnd disturliumn-s at the
South. Thewe are nominal, soeiul and
moral, and the fimt is a greater source
of evil than all others comhiiifcd.
Tliere can be no Mitlnfuctory adjiiHt
jnent, no jerniauent pence imtween the
two races ut the Smith, until the negro
iilmudoiiB politicx and bidti farewell to
jiolItJeul plory in these Btutes.
A persistent effort on the part of the
negro to attain that which he never
kui.it attain will Inevitably lend to a
oontlict, the horrors of which ure tin
Imaginable, It is a forcgtio conclus
ion thnt the colored element can never
liceome a ruling class in any of the
southern states, no matter h.w much
they may predominate in nuinhcre in
white communities. Every political
leader of the race knows this to be an
undeniable fact It is this relentless
persistency on the part of the one race
to be, nnd the relentless perfistency 01;
the part of the other to prevent it from
Iteing and prevent it they will at all
cost that causes the trouble. It is no
use to deny theoe facts; it would rather
be wise if we would recognize them in
time to avert the evils tliat must follow
every futile attempt in thut direction.
It is unreasonable for the people of
the North to expect that of the ieople
of the South which they themselves do
not accord the negro. It is unreasona
ble for any people tocxpect the wealth,
intelligence nnd refinement of a com
munity to yield passive obedience and
lieconie submissive to the domination
of it ignorant and more illiterate class,
and so long rs tliere is n persistency in
this direction, encouraged by unprin
oipletl politicians tor sinister motives,
so long will tliere be serious conflicts
between the two elements. The negro
must abandon polities for ft time and
strip himself of nil delusive and vision
ary ideas of political honor and prefer
ments In those states and turn his at
tention to the Industrial pursuits that
mark the prosperity and progressive
itess .of every other race around him.
