The Fireman Killed and fcngif cer
Scalded Passengers Unhurt.
Lant Monday night's overland train
was going south a bo tit two miles this
side of Ilalsay, opposite the farm of
It. Powell, at a speed f thirty miles an
hour, when ucow appeared on the track
standing broadside. It was raining
hard and the light wae dim, so tli$it
the anlmpl was not seen until the train
was almost oil hor. Tho engineer,
John McFaddon, immediately whis
tled down brakes. The cowcatcher
struck the cow In thcrniddle,throwlng
her to the headlight,' from which she
hounded again to the track, raising tho
engine from the wheels and throwing
it from, the track. This was as given
by Mr. SIcFaddcn to a Deinocrar man.
The engine run across a ditch to an ad
joining fence, the tender was complete
ly tipped oyer. A fruit car following
was mashed to pieces and stopped on
the opposite side f the engine. The
tender knocked tho top of tho cab of!',
breaking several stopcocks off which
sent forth their deadly dements on tho
fireman and engineer. Tho mail car
was twisted sideways on the track, but
remained upright, the agent, Mr. Cox,
just closing tho windows in time to
prevent a deluge of ht water and
steam from tho engine. The baggage
cars and two pullman cars jumped the
track, the remaining cn'rs remaining
on the rails. The fireman, William
Kausom, was found between the engine
and tender car dead, being scalded in a
frightful manner, and one leg was
broken and badly smashed. The engi
neer was thrown out of the cab to the
ground, and was insensible for some
time, but soon came to. One leg and a
hand were ecaldcd, and he was some
what bruised, but not dangerously in
jured. The passengers st:dt'd that, tho
accident was so sudden and unexpected
that it was all over before they were
aware of its serious nature. A3 the
cars ran snie distance, the tdiock was
not great. Conductor Young immedi
ately sent for wrecking trains, und by
noon to-day the track was in condition
for the passage of trains. The engineer
ant' the body of Ransom were brought
to this city on a special train, and were
seen by a Democrat man. William
iiansoni, the deceased fireman, was a
man about thirty years of r.gc, his pa
rents residing in the oast, and having
no relatives in Oregon. He was en
gagv d to a young lady of Eugeiie and
was to !e married on the tenth of this
month. Mr. Ransom succeeded Quint
Guthrie, killed at tho train wreck at
this city, and tho engine was the
saiae one wrecked here, a fact without
any significance except to superstitious
people. Democrat.

Hon. Alrxander Downing died at his
farm near Lebanon In Linn cou::ty,on
Sunday, (Jet. G, after a lingering illness
brought on mainly after so many years
by injuries which he received while
serving in the union army during the
army of the rebellion . Mr. Downirg's '
ouly brother on the coast, Superinten
dent G. S. Downing, of the state peni
tentiary, was notitk-1 of h's death on
Sunday evening by t digraph, and
