If rocont rqtorts ns to the condition
iT t!io I'urojH'rtii whont crop are cor
rw't, we are likely to lmve a good nmr
'ketfnr any surplus v may lmve to
offer. 1 1 i true that England, France
and Hpuiu promise hnrvosts considera
bly bettor than last year, but tlto crop
in many larjre districts of lUissia is a
complete failure. In India and Aus
tralia tho wheat yield is alarmingly
deficient, while in Austro-IIungary,
F.ounmnia ". and Eestern Germany,
wheat, rye and barley have been de
stroyed by drought and cyclonic
storms. The London correspondent of
of the 2Jew York Times, after a careful
review of the whole situation, says that
"there Is almost a tearful Interest in the
eastern hemisphere as to what the
American crop will be like. The short
age over here will be so great that the
market will be more at the mercy of
the United States than ever before, and
the next report from the Washington
bureau in eagerly watched for, as an
Indication of how severe a squeeze may
be expected."
We heard It remarked this week that
there have been more than forty hous
es built in Lebanon since the first of
last January. We think this is too
many, but there have been over thirty
besides several other improvements, of
which we would mention the steam
planer. We know of at least a dozen
other new buildings which will be
erected between now and next Janua-
.1 i i t
ry, aim several oiner suusmiiuui im
provements we could mention, for In
stance, the new dry goods store which
will open in the Churchill & Monteith
stand the first of next month, and
the eteam chopper which will start
up next week, the new livery stable
and severaltther substantial improve
ments, all of which go to build up the
town. Xow in the face of all of these
improvements some people will ask If
the town ia Improving! Might as well
stand in the midst of a Kansas cyclone
and ask if the winds ever blew! or
stand in an Iowa snow storm and ask
if it ever gets cold as to stand in Leba
non in the midst of all of the sound of
hammer and saw and ask if the town
is growing. No, there is no boom, but
a ulce, steady growth. People are set
ting around saying, "What a fine bar
Sain I missed by not buying that prop
erty once." You are now missing just
such bargains, for in five years all the
property that is now selling at low rates
will be worth double or treble what it
is now.
The pamphlets giving a description
of Linn county with its various resour

best in the county, have all been print-

Eighteen thousand ofhese pamphlets
have been printed, several thousand of
which were sent Jo the Milwaukee ex

..ere are thousands of people in the
lantern stales who desire just such in
formation as in given in this pamphlet
on Linn county Now what Lebanon
needs is a pamphlet of this kind writ
ten up in the same style. It need not
be so large as this, and would cost but
a trifle in comparison to the vast
amount of good it would do our town.
It takes printer's ink to bring people
to our fair land, but the question now
is, who will help to supply It?
There are still a few strange com
ing into this town to look at the
country, and see what chance there is
for securing land. It would be one of
the greatest advantages thia place
could do to have a pamphlet of this
town and vicinity, and show them the
most desirable localities and the great
advantages of the country. If Leba
non does not let the world hear from
it, and that pretty soon, it will have to
content Itself with '"sitting on the
t-nee" Rd watching the thrifty lm
mijrrantego by and merely catching
the few who may happen around.

A NEW MWMMC.
'Swindlers have struck a new scheme
for heating the unhappy granger who
is inclined to make money more rapid
ly than by the paths of strict rectitude.
It is the man who wants to get rich fust
that lays himself open to tho wiles of
such scoundrels as this. A well dress
ed man calls at tho farm house and
wants to buy a good horse. A good
horse is shown him. Prices are named
and ufter bantering, a bargain isstruek
and the buyer pays fit) down to secure
tho bargain and leaves to return in a
week for tho horse. The next day an
other well dressed and gentlemanly
man calls and takes a fancy totliesamo
horse. The farmer caunot sell it be
cause It is already sold, but buyer Is'o.
2 wants the homo bad, as it will just
mutch his other liorso which he has in
New York or Chicago or some other
place. He oilers $10, f 15 or $25 ubove
the price for which it was sold to No. I.
The farmer cannot sell the horse, but
buyer No. 2 will be back In a few days
and if the farmer Iiub not sold the horse
he will be glad to pay the $23 extra for
the animal. When No. 1 comes for tho
horse the farmer wants to keep the an
imal to sell to No. 2, no he oilers No. I
his money and ?10 more back for his
bargaiiu No. 1 takes the money, is $10
ahead, half of which he gives to No. 2,
and the farmer still owns the horso.
