For week ending June 1, 1889:
The temperature wh decidedly above
the average. The rainfall hiw Int n be
low the avcragn, except in Union,
Umatilla and adjoining counties,
where, owing to utorm on the 29th, It
wua above the average. The nunhlne
Jim beon above the average and very
warm.
In western Oregon, except a few
droit, no rain fell. The effect of them?
condition" ou crops of all kinds has
beeu excellent.
Dniungo was done in parts of Uma
tilla county on the 23th by the "cloud
burtt" and In the ueigorhood of La
Grande, Union Co., by the thnnder
storm and hull on the Mime date. Tho
cloud buMt in Umatilla county cauwd
t reams to overflow, and iu one in
stance washed away a house and
drowned a ludy; of the same storm
heavy rains and hail fell at La Grande.
The hull was as large as small ben eggs
and In five hours 1:77 inches of rain
fell. The railroad track was blockaded
by land slides. The hail did some
damage to cro, but it is thought that
the benefit frtru the rain will outweigh
the damage.

Iu western Oregon the condltious

extraordinary. Thousands of acres of
high bunch grass land has been sown
to wheat and will yield good crops.
The temperature iu the state ranged
from 40 to 00 degrees.

Monmouth is beautifully situated two
and one-half miles west of Indepen
dence on the Narrow Guage R. K,
and a better location could not be found
In the state for a large school such a
has been at Monmouth for the past few
years.
With the new buildings that are to
be erected during the summer, and the
beautiful country surrounding, this is
destlued to become in a very few year
a school that will send out a larje
number of trained teachers each year.
The number this year who will gradu
ate is thirty-six, thus showing a large
increase from last year.,- With this
number of. trained teachers and the
good prospects of the school In the
fears to come, there is no doubt that
the schools of Oregon will become very
greatly improved. The people of the
entire state, as well as the people cf
Polk county, cau readily see the great
benefit of such a school ou tho com
mon Bchools of the state. Graduates
from tills school can be found in every
part of the state, meeting with the best
of success, as they are trained to the
work. The building to be constructed
will be a brick structure and will be an
ornament to the county, showing the
enterprise of the people of this section.
Tltc advantage and encouragement
of such a school can only be apprecia
ted by those who have had schools
under their charge, and those who are
making it their aim to teach in the
public schools.
