Parents' knowledge of music is quite
limited in coinparison with some of the
itlier hranehes. Hence they do not
appreciate its value. They did not
study it when they went to school, so
why should thvir children.'
There are four systems or method.-? of
teaching music being used to some ex
tent at the present time, vis: Koto
sintrtiiK, fixed do, moveable do, and
tonic sol-fa.
The following statistics are taken
from the report of S43 cities to the bu
reau of education at Washington, 1).
'. Out of the reports sent in 9G re
I ort no musical instructions given, 4
report that sinking i permitted. From
the iM3 remaining, T-0 are either teach
ing by rote or no system at all, are

bfft.i-u tha'j the preference is given to
t!:e " m.v;il.ic do" system over dloth
rr.s i:i aoont tiie ratio of two to one.
Vise "movable do" system is the
i'i thud that is employed in nearly all
singing books that I ever saw, and
what 1 know of the others, this seems
tj me to be much the best All sys
tems must have symbols to represent
tone-iiitcher and tone-lengths. How
-an tone-pitchers be represented in any
better way thau by the linee and spac
es of the stnfi", und how can tone
k'ngths 1)0 represented in any letter
way than by half, quarter or eighth
notes?
1 luring my visit at the National Ed
ucation Association last summer at
San l-randsco, I attended the depart
ment of music regularly. There was a
great deal said about touic sol-fa, " fix
id do" and "movable do." One of
theJadioH present said it wts all dough
to her, and that there was no bread
to feed upon. "What we need as teach
crs, I think, are directions for teaching
! he commonly accepted method. Why
should children be taught to read mu
hc? Because they will take more in
terest in thesunject than if only taught
to sing a few songs by iote. They will
be indeiHTident and will not have to
have other! to teach them every new
ong that' they may wish to learn to
ing. If children are taught tosing by
rote oniy, in a short time the habit
will be ,io iimily fixed that it is only
by a great effort that they can be
taught to become readers of music at
all. Learning to sing by rote is like
learning to piny on an organ by ear.
Why should we fill children with
mugs to be ground out like a hand or
gan? Hence I: say, by all means
teueh children to rcwl music.
Any teacher who can sing the dia
fmie scale nicely and correctly is, I
think, prepared to ;ommence teaching
vocal music in the common schools to
Wgiuncrs. Of course a great deal of
st If study and practice would be nec---ary
for them to keep ahead of their
c-laWCS.
The first thing I think that we teach
ers of Oregon should do is to send tor
the series of music readers adopted by
the state, Loom's Music Lessons 2fo.s
I, 2, 3 and I, which, by the way, are
t h" tx at that I haver seen.
Then if possible Introduce one or
more of the numbers Into our school,
which ones depending on the grade of
our school. But if we can't induce
parents to buy them at flrut we must
leach without the book.
Huy blank books costing five cent
apiece ourselves for our-pupils. Then
we can let them copy songs that we
have written on the black-board into
tin ir blank books, which we will now
i all music readers. .

Pupils should be taught to beat time
almost from tho first. 1 find that chil
dren from eight to twelve years of age
learn to beat time mora readily than
older pupils or adults do. A number
of exercise- or motion songs should be
taught to a school of young pupils, and
a few rounds to a school of older pupils
to bo sung whenever they 'become tired
or restless, I should id ways make a
habit of commencing and closing
school with some appropriate song, but
iw teaching them to read music I
should always call thoni out in clauses.
Hee that they sit or stand in the proper
position. )o not let them strain their
voices by singing too loudly. Attend
to the correct pronunciation and the
distinct articulation of t he word, and
in the cud you will foci rowardfid for
ull of youreflorts.
To io a good singer is as groat an ac
complishment as it is to be a trood ora
tor, .painter or sculptor. Think no
time lost in which you cultivate assid
uously the ability tosing well. Shakes
