national organization of which they
are a part. They heartily endorse the
ndministration of Presideut Cleveland,

They demand the forfeiture of un-
earned land grants and that the public
domain be held as a sacred trust for
homes for our rapidly increasing popu

They favor the government's keep
ing all its pledges with the soldiers of
5rVnion. They favor an amend
ent to the constitution of the United

sople. They demand the completion
the Cascades Locks, and an increase
f the appropriation for the improve

is Gov. Sylvester Pennoyer.

tige of tariff talk this week. Speeches !
follow each other at the rate of from
six to ten each day, for or ngainst the
Mills bill as may lie. On Tuesday
there were six speeches; three for the
bill and three against it. On Wednes
day, ten orators held the floor success
ively. "Yesterday several long speeches
consumed the day. To-day, Messrs
Randall, MeKlnley and Breckinridge,
of Kentucky, will ring out their ver
dicts, and on Saturday, the prominent
republican leader from Maine, Mr.
Heed, and Speaker Carlisle will have
the debate all to themselves, and with
their speeches it is understood that the
general debate on the bill will close.
The report has been current at the
Capitol that after the general discus
sion on the bill has closed, its consider
ation by sections, and final action up
on it will be allowed to go over until
after tnc Democratic National Conven
tion at St Louis. The purpose of this
it is said would be to get a declaration
on the subject from the convention,
which will bind every member of the
party in eong-sf to vote for the bill,
and thus secure its passnge. Still no
one knows what will be done about the
mutter at this time, and it is hazard
ous to venture a prediction.
A speech made by Representative
Butterworth, of Ohio, against the Mills
tariff bill, was the feature of the debate
on Tuesday last. He addressed a full
house, and much attention was paid
him for an hour or so after he had fin
ished. He argued that a tariff was
not, strictly speaking, a tax; it was a
trade regulation relating to that part
of the nations businees which extends
to the productions of other countries.
