THE BERGERON CURE. A Xaw TrMlmMI for Conaamptlna See eeaafully Tried la New Orleans. What is known as the compound-gat treatment for consumption has beei attracting a good deal of attention ii medical circles of late. It is the in vention of a French physician. Dr. Bergvrcn, of Lyons, who claims t have accomplished remarkable resultf through its agency. The treatment has been expermented with in this country to some extent re ceiitly, and the results appear to war rant tbe good opinion entertained : the method by the French physician A case has been reported from JSevi Orleans whore the treatment was tried on a lady who was in the last stages oi quick conmimption. Two-thirds of thi lung was destroyed, an examination by the hiicmscope revealed bacilli and a large amount of lung tissue jn th matter, expectorated. The tempera ture was from 102 to 104. with night sweats, no appetite and continual e-r-nn-h ' The lady'slmsband, who chanced to bo a chemist, improvised apparatus foi making the comiound of carlionie acid and sulphuretted hydrogen gases and for applying them. The cflcct was at once perceptible. The aoiigh ceased. the appetite improved, the chest pain disappeared in four days and there was- a gain of one pound in weight the firs. week, which was increased to three and a half pounds at the end of two weeks. In half an hour after the administra tion of the. gas the temperature fell from 102 to 98, with an absolute craving for food which seemed to agree perfect ly with the patient. These favorable conditions have continued, the patient steadily gaining iu strength and weight so that there seems to be a fair expects. non of complete recovery. If more general and thorough tests shall sustain the claims that are made for this new treatment of consumption it will prove to be one of the most val uable discoveries made by medical science Chicago Journal. Much has been written about the art of entertaininir and the duties of a hostess, but is there no obligation on the other side? To tto a re illy accept able -rue. si requires infinite tact or else possession of most of tho cardiual virtues. How many a guest has gone home a little less liked by the hostess! A little care and ; thouEhtftilnesa will make --visiting" a less trying oiileal. In the first place, ik is better to under stay rather than overstay an Invlt ition and Is pleasanter for both parties If the length of the visit desired is stated lie- fore hand by the hostess, rerliaps the most consideration of all is that the family routine should lie disturbed as little as possible. Bo up in time for breakfast and prompt at all meals. lo not ask for lea or milk at odd times, or rder what is not on the table. Re member vou are not at a tao'el. I once saw a la ty guest call lor olives wnen they were not on the bill of fare, and tho hostess has never forgotten this particular act of rudeness. Make as little tmuble as possible. If there I only one overworked ser vant, why not make your own lied? Have some employment of your own as an excusp for retiring to your own room for some timo each day. Do not follow your hoa ess about all the timo. as she gouerally has many duties, and especially respect private nwmis, nn less particularly Invited to them, llo not give your washing to the house servant Pay for your own luggage in coming and going, if a public convey ance is employed, and do not sponge upon your hostess for mr fare and trivial expenses. These little things make many a friendship less warm You certainly would not take one of your friends with you unless par ticularly invited to do so by the host ess. Do not demand too much atten tion. Be easily pleased and chime In most cordially with any thing proposed. Try to please the tastes of your host ess in everv way. Consult their likes and dislikes even In manners of dress; be interested in what interests them; be sure not to hurt their feelings. Do not criticise the family you visit; admire what is good; do not notiae the rest Do not Always tell of the fine things you have seen or eaten elsewhere. Help your hostess; amuse a child or entertain other guests. Show your love for your hostess In all little ways. Give the servant who waits upon you some money. It makes it easier for the mis tress if the servants do "not object to company." Try to make some return tor yonr visits cither an invitation, a timely gift, or at least honestly ex pressed gratitude r- appreciation. Lastly, study some one who is an ever- welcome guest and try to grasp hor secret A. M. Turner. Oiir M xican neighbors recently played a neat little game in evading the payment of duty on wool, which at the same time was perfectly legal. A flock of sheep was driven across the bonier, and duty was assessed upon them as. live-stock. They were then sheared and the wool placed npon the market withont having been snbj?cted to dutv. By this means the tlrrifty wool-growers effected a saving of about fifty per cent in tha duty. CArtsf tan at Work. Uagiey r"tjoTng to .Newport this summer?" De Baggs "H'ra well, J dunno.
