couraging from Eastern Oregon:
On our third page will be found the
proceedings of the meeting called on
Saturday, for the purpose of instituting
a Prohibitory Amendment League.
The call brought out quite a number of
the temperance people from different
fiarts of the county, and considerable
nterest was manifested in the move to
try Prohibition in Qregon. The tem
perance people w ill put fourth every ef
fort to carry the measure, and if any
one supposes it will be snowed under
there is a suprise party in store for
them. The state will be fhioded with
temperance speakers, and the iron will
lie kept hot and effected blows repeat

On the afternoon of Monday last the
usual quiet of our town was disturlicd
by a sudden startling rattle of wheels,
ai-coiniianieil by the ringing' hstf heat
of a runaway team of horses, which un
mindful of the wear and tear of the
wagon to which they were attached,
were making fast time, unrestrained by
rem or driver. After "taking in" the
principal streets, and doing but little
damage other than tho distruetion of
the hotel sign, and a few feet of side
walk, they were brought to a standstill

A stroll through town brings to no

cultural depot of Coshow & Cable is
rinihed and furnished with a stock of
agricultural implements. The proper
ty of ( I. A. Dyson is receiving many
additions in the way of a new fence,
which as well as the the dwelling is be

1. Coshow, Jr., has . been added a new
porch, the house being newly painted.
Jay A. Bishop has completed a new
ham. The work on the resilience of

ahead Wm. Cox has ended the frame
of a new huilding. H. B Moyer has
added a new railing to the ba'h-ony of
liis dwelling, also repainting through
out. The dwelling of T. S. Pillsbury

a few of the many improvements tak
ing place, and although the cry of
hard times is sometimes beard, yet
there is nothing to show that the town
Is retrograding, or that business Is not
as good or perhaps a little better, tnan
in many valley towns of the popula
tion, of 'this place. .
