Tuesday evening many of our citizens assembled at Hotel Sweet Home to witness a try out of a chemical fire engin, which had been brought to town by the salesman, during the afternoon. A large pile of boxes, barrels and other rubbish had been assembled and after being thoroughly saturat­ ed with coal oil and gasoline, was touched dff with a match. In an instant the mass was aflame and the engine put to work. Of course the flames Were soon extinguished, though, for. some reason, the,mar- chine did not work up to expecta­ tions. There is no question but what our town should be provided with some sort of fire protection, other than a mere bucket brigade. We are told that the cost of one of these handsome fire extinguishers, is less than $600. If one fire is prevented the city will be repaid for the cost of the machine.
