L. N. Tittle started Tuesday for
a two-months visit to his old home
in Kansas.
Merchant W. J. Lawrence of
Foster, was looking after business
in Sweet Home Tuesday.
S. K. Lewis, of Cottage Grove,
spent the holiday season with Sweet
Home friends and relatives.
Frank Brady, We are told, is a
candidate for city marshal a matter
to be fixed by the new council.

Doc. Wilson has treated himself
with a new buggy. He can drive
faster with the new vehicle than he
could with the old one.
Our new High school building
will not be ready for occupancy for
some weeks, owing to the fact that
the heating plant is yet to be in­
stalled.
Supervisor Mack Moss of Holley,
was greeting his friends in town
Tuesday. He is now busily planning
road work for his district for the
coming year.
All of the 12-4 homesteaders are
still in Portland or elsewhere, visit­
ing with on exception. They are
combining pleasure with business,
evidently.
No use to grieve over past mis­
takes. Set your face to the future
with a resolution to avoid the mis­
takes, indiscretions, etc., for which
you now grieve.
Square up the books of the past
year’s business Mr. Merchant and
start in the new year with a clean
score. But don’t forget to make
provision for advertising. It- pays.
Drs. Lowe & Turner, the
well known eye specialists
of Portland, will be in Lebanon
again on Monday and Tuesday, Jan.
12 and 13, at Hotel Lebanon.
Dr. Wilson reported1 two births,
last week as follows: To Mr. and
Mrs. C. S. Wiley, on December 21,
a 10-pound girl and to Mr. and Mrs.
J., H. Steingrandt, on Christmas
day, an 8-pound girl. There is
some sense, Joe, in this kind of a
Christmas gift.
Telegraphic Notes
Bud Anderson, the Vancouver,
Wash., pugulist and Leach Cross,
the man who knocked Bud out some
months ago at Vernon, Cal., are
having another try at the boxing
game today. When Bud was de­
feated by Cross, he was suffering
from appendicitis and was operated
upon two or three days thereafter.
He is said to be in fine condition for
the fight today.
Governor West has sent his pri­
vate secretary, Miss Fern Hobbs, to
Copperfield to take charge of the
local option trouble in that mining
town. The governor seems to have
full confidence that Miss Hobbs will
be master of the situation.
President Wilson has recalled.

New Income Tax Ruling
Washington, Dec, 30.—Further
regulations for payment of the’In­
come tax issued today, provide that j
husband and wife living together!
shall be entitled to an exemption
of $4000 from the aggregate net
income of both, but when separated
and living apart permanently, each
shall be entitled to a $3000 exemp-
ton.
Where husband and wife living I
together have Separate estates, their
income may be made on one return i
but the amount of the income of I
each with the full names and ad-j
dresses must be shown. ,
The husband, the regulation says,'
should make the return as the head
and legal representative of the
household. Where a wife has an j
estate managed by herself, from
which she receives an income of
more than $3000, she may make
her own return, and if the husband;
in such cases, has an income which
brings the total above $4000, the
wife’s return should be attached to
that of her husband or vice versa.
Where either husband or wife has
an income of $3000 or more a re­
turn is required under the law, no
matter whether the combined in­
come of both be less than $4000.
When the joint income exceeds
$4000, husband and wife are jointly
and separately liable for making the
proper returns and for the payment
of the tax. The single or married
status of persons claiming the ex­
emptions provided shall be deter­
mined at the time made, if it is
made within the year of the return
otherwise the states shall be in the
treasury department at the close of
the yeai;.
Pleasannt Valley Items
Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Horner were
guests of Mr. and Mrs. A. Horner
Saturday and Sunday.
Mr. Miller lost one of his work
horses last week.
Quite a number of young folks
from Pleasant Valley attended the
Christmas tree exercises at Sweet
Home.
The Pleasant Valley school will
reopen the first Monday in January
with L. E. Simons of Sodaville, as
teacher.
