That is a question too deep for the
editor to attempt to answer, but
they came and they went, and each
in their own way enjoyed the 148th
anniversary of the nation's birthday
as best fitted their desires. Some
went to Newport, some to Salem
while others went to Stayton. Jef
ferson. Crawfordsville. Brownsville
and Albany.
The Forks of the Santiam Com-
munity Club at its June meeting de
cided on holding a picnic at Rich
ardson Gap, not knowing that the
several nearby communities were in
cubating the same idea, and would
celebrate the 4th io their own com
munities. This great number of
local festivities made the attendance
smaller at each than the occasion
merited, while io this community
two celebrations divided the home
crowd—the ooe at Richardson Gap
and the other west of town at the
T. B. Frospal grove. The attend
ance at the Gap was about 500 and
about the same number west of the
city.
The Community Club had its hands
tied when speakers were solicited —

for busmens reasons, hence the club
fell upon L. H McMahan of Salem
for an address, like a drowning man
grabbing at a straw, and he failed
to aiqwar. but with all these obsta
cles a most pleasant day was enjoyed
by ah present.
Music throughout the day was
furnished bv the Mill Qty band, and
for a new organisation it plays won
derfully well. Quite a number ac
companied the band from its home
town.
A short business session was held
