THE MEASURES.
Next Tuesday, June 7. the voters
of Oregon will pans upon five meas
ures submitted to them by the leg
islature of last winter.
The first on the list la to increase
the legislative term to 60 «lays In
stead of the present lu-day term,
and to increase the legislator's pay
from $3 to |5 per day.
The Tribune opines that Oregon
now has too many laws, many of
which conflict with each other simplv
because the lawmakers were ignor
ant of statutory laws already on the

A better plan would be to
submit the proponed law of one ses
sion to lie finally named upon at the
session two ^ears later.
By that
time any confliction or deficiency of
the prunaed law will ba ascertained.
The pay increase is a mistake. Just
as good material can lie secured at
<3 per day as at $f>. Anyway a
legislature can do harm enough in
40 days. A 60-day session will only
make a bad matter worse.
The second measure submitted is
the soldier bonus act. The soldier
boys who went from Oregon were
enlisted by the United States gov
ernment and all pay, bonus, or other
emoluments, should be drawn from
the general government. The world
war veterans do not claim anything
la due them from the state of Ore
gon other than the gratitude of the
people. Yet they are trying to ex
ploit this gratitude. Our state has
provided for the education of all the
soldier boys, or such aa wish it, at a
large expense

They are not willing to wait a few
years until taxpayers get over or
have become reconciled to the road
bond propositions because. aa one of
these vets said at the legislature last
winter "We can’t get it then.”

for thia purpose simply means prac

The third constitutional amend
ment. if carried, will enable the gov
ernor to veto the emergency clause
when attached to a proposed law

une thinks this amendment should
be passed.
