present troubled water*.
The Tribune ia not an alarmist,
but think* our nation ia too close to
national danger to lie at all comfort
able. It ia time to quit th* mealy
mouth business and get sternly d< wn
to meet the crisis which undoubtedly
is near.
All organizations whoa*
purpose ia to destroy th* govern
ment. are traitor*. “The penalty
of treason i* death," says the G. A
R. ritual and it is our national duly
to scotch this danger before it gath
ers force. The unjustified leniency
of the .Montesano verdict is a pointer
we should herd.

A QUESTIONABLE V ERD IH
A /
It ia a difficult matter to under
stand the inspiration which cau«*d
the Montesano jury to hand up the
verdict it rendered anent the ten
conspirators who made the bloody
attack upon the legionair* parade at
Centralia November 11 last.
If the report* of the daily pre**
are true, which no doubt they are.
the state made out it* case without
question. The killing of I Jeu tenant
Grimm was admitted and it was
proven that he was at least 100 feet
from the I. W. W. hall when the
fatal bullet passed through hi* body.
It was proven beyond a doubt that
there was firing from two point*
out*ide the hall, which Judge Wilson
in hi* charge said was unlawful, or
in a plain word, murder.
THE DIFFERENCE.
When President Wilson came home
from Paris he brought th* treaty of
Vefsaille*. While thi* treaty was
not just as th* president would have
it, yet it was the Ixxit obtainable
after several months' diplomatic la
bor with the treaty delegate* fr«»m
many nations of the world. It was
the result of compromise and which
has l>een the basis of all treaties be-
tween nations in the past and which
will lie the case with treaties of the
future. The word “treaty" implies
compromise anyway A treaty could
not be formed otherwise.
Within two or three daya the pres-
idenl submitted the treaty to the
U. 8. senate for ratification
After
nearly 15 months of wrangling, con-
firmation has not t>ecn reached. The
republican side, under the leader-
ship of Senator Lodge, a practically 1
new treaty has lieen evolved, not by '
b* held responsible for the failure
of the Ixxig* treaty, but not for th*
failure of th* Veraaills* treaty.
Anybody who is disposed to be
fair in making up his opinion must
come to tht* cundu*l«»n. Of Cour«*
th* prejudiced politician and th*
yaller dog variety of Mr. Lodge'*
party the hatred of Wilson, will
■ccetit the Ixlyr conclusion*. and if
the republican party goes down to
defeat next fall they can charge It
