Editor Santiam News,
Ih-ar air:
I was .«omewhat amused at the
editorial in your issue of Sept 24,
under the heading, "Greatthing»
Gr Scio, and eapcciaily reading
the former editorial printed bj
T L Dugger. July 27. 1911. head-
.J, ”U»t Wo Forget.” And
strange to say, be is going to re
turn and set up his paper, ot
printing plant, where he «ays he
wan hiring money. There is ro
more bu'-:n<M now than then
done in Scio, and I wonder how
it is tn be mor*' profitable tn him
w ith the Sa> thm News still be-
in j published, and purchased of
him through Mr Gooding and
from Mr Gooding to Mr Charles,
who paid Mr Dugger something
I ke $1.1<O (XI. This must look
like Mr Charles was making
money, and he want« a finger in
th-- "boodle.” I rather think the
"nigger in the fence" in thi>
scheme is a few disgruntled
merchants in Scio who will wait
upon Mr Dugger in a short time
us they «lid upon Mr Charles if
he dare ssy anything in the in
terent of the Farmers Education
al & Co-operative Union.
I want to nay to Mr Charle»,
Mr Dugger and to the busi ne»
men in general in Scio, if you
think you can be HU« Cessful in
your business enterprises with
out the patronage of th» farm-t
era, GOTO IT. If you want to
t> ycott either Mr Charles or Mr-
Dugger by withdrawing your ad-
vhich we pay for, when they
wish to publish anything in th
mterv.t of the farmer of th<
J armers I’nion, you certainly
have the right to do so.
Bui
.vhen the farnu rs quit your town
ill of Scio would not maxe a
good cow pasture. No business
man in Scio has anv just ground«
to buck the Farmers Union. Tht
farmer.» pay your taxes, your
water and light bills, ductor bill«,
and living expenses, by adding
ill these to the co-t of the goods I
.ve buy from you, and if we
•>y cooperating together in
tuying, buy as cheaply as you
do, and can thus save to our-
elves 25 to UK! |M-r cent on th«
a! ulous prices you charge us,
mY farmer with a thimbleful of
hinK in his think tank is going
o do this sooner or later.
W<
.iave no unkind feelings toward
my business man in Scio, or
.mywhere else. Self preserva
uon is the first law of nature
ind the Farmers Educational i.
Co-operative Union is an organi
zation with that intent and pur i
uose on the part of farmers, and
t certainly has Uen quite piofit-
ible to us, and h^le it shall grow
Setter and better .as the year«
go by.
