Salem. Or., Aug.. 7.-The State
Board today closed a rontr-act for the
purchase of 16 acre* of land adjoining
the penitentiary aite for $.3500, and the
prison brickyard will lie enlarged im
mediately. Thia ia the first time in the
history of the state that additional land
has t>een purchased without the Legis
lature setting aside an appropriation.
The 16 acres was purchased with money
realised from the manufacture of brick
at the prison. At present convicts are
turning out 23,000 bricks n lay. wh. r.-
they made but 16,n00 formerly, and the
plant will be depended upon largely in
future to supply funds with which to
purchase additional lands.
Farmers in Clackamas Cour.ty pay
taxes on improvements assessed as such
at over a million and a half. At the
same time some 400.000 horsepower,
worth at the least calculation, forty
millions of dollars, is assessed at not! •
ing. Then some people wonder where
the taxes are going to come from to
piy public expenses if improvements
