founds of
potash
practically
amount of phesphoric acid la found In
350 pounds of '< per cent, arid phos
phate, so a Ina of wood ashes Is
worth about the same as a fertiliser
250 pounds of good grade acid pboe
phate and 200 pounds of sulphate of
potash.
True the plant food la tn a more
available form In the commercial fer
tlllxerv but the tons of wood aabea
also contains about *00 pounda of
lime which la especially valuable to
the clover and othv-r leguiulnoua
crop*,
IJist winter w-e put
about some apple trv
pounds a na scattered
tree, as I far
reached, A
both the trees and the fruit was no
tired last ' summer In spite of the un
favorable early season
The wood ashes can bo profitably
applied to the garden, the meadow
or In fact almoat any crop except
potatoea.
If wood ashea are applied to the
potato crop it produces conditions
favorable to potato scab
There 1s not much loss of plant
food when wood a»lw'« are applied to
the soil at any season of the year
since potash and phosphoric acid are
not enslly washed out of the soil
The ashes should not be mlied with
the manure or any other nitrogenous
manure as the Itme In the ashes may
cause loss of nitrogen.
If mixed with acid phosphate the
lime In the ashes will ->r bine with
the phosphoric acid and render It un
available
On many farms there Is a few bun
dred pounds of ashes produced that
ere worth saving and applying to the
soil, then where lumte'ing la carried
3n extensively there are tone of wwid
sshes produced each year that are
worth hauling for several miles and
applying to the soil.

TRACTION PLOWING IN WEST
r
On the large farms of the great
plains and the ranches of California
traction englnea— both steam and
gasoline are used to an Increasing
silent In farming operations, eape
rlally In plowing land
The make
shift outfits formerly used for thia
purpose have been largely replaced by
heavier and stronger engines and
gang plowa especially designed for
thia use
The advantages of traction plowing
are (1) that the work can be rushed
when conditions are favorable; (fl
that the work can be done with a
smaller force of handa. and fewer
horses have to be kept; (3) tn bot
dry weather engines can be used
when horses could t ot stand the
work; HI with an engine It Is poaal-
ble to plow very difficult soils, and
also to plow deeper than with horses,
and (SI under favorable condltlona.
the coot of traction plowing has been
brought lower than that of plowing
with horsea
The steam engines weigh from T
to 20 tons range from 20 to M horse
power, cost from 11.500 to ft 000. and
will plow from 15 to 50 acrea a day
A traction plowing outfit constate
of (1) an engine; <2l the plows or
disks arranged In ganga; and (J)
miscellaneous conveniences for car
rylng supplies, making repalra. etc
The else and coot of the outfit and
the amount of work It will do depend
largely on the number of plowa oper
