WAS THE GIME WORTH IKE UWE*
RESIDENT TAET
concluded his long
journey, circumxcrib
ing the United States
making u totul dir*
l.-ince of nearly 1H.OUO miles, laM
week. The piH p e, as a rule,
applaud the idea of the chief
executive making these journeys
over the countr-'. Many people
re/ard the <>p|Mirt(iity ot seeing
their president, as the li-sding
••vent of their lives, while others
regard the president, »imply asa
man entrust# I, temporarily, witn
tne contrvl of the destinies of the
American people. They care less
for seeing him than they do for
the policies of government he
lldV'iCUteM.
Tne president was received,
wherever he travel«d, with all
the honor and respect due from a
I tyiil |H <iple to their rul< r. The
journey u aa made at public • x-
I m 'I uh *, at a cost of nearly $.‘IO,(MX',
which was generally nppltiudei .
All feel that the ri#nest nation ot
t><e world can afford this, com-
paral velv. trilling exp •use.
Trie question ars-M. hn the
journey been a ptying invest
ment to the president and the
people? II h the game been
worth
the candle? Has the
president i 'creased the goodwill
of the people for himseif? Hks
his many addresses, in which he
outlined some of the policies he
will advocate, increased the con
fidence of the people in his
judgment as the nation's chief
executive?
I union >tedly his advocacy of a
g -neral plan to irrigate tue an id
s rtions, has added to his |s>ou-
Inrily. But lii.s hearty endorse
ment of the Payne-Aldrich tariff,
a - being the best tariff measure
ever enacted by a Republican
congress, and his advocacy of a
ship subsidy, has had tne effect
of a sort of wet blanket, spread
over tne entire country. Also,
as the president is expected to
endorse Senator Aldrich’s central
hanking scheme ami the further
fact that he will, probably, sup
port the effort to remodel t .e
inter-state and the anti-trust
laws, so that the sting will lie
removed, has caused tne progres
sive element of his party to feel
a serious misgiving. It has
caused a sort of political eclipse
of the party sun and an unex
pressed wish that
Tneodore
Roosevelt was occupying the
Whitehouse,
instead of his
understudy, William II. Taft.
The evidence that an attempt
will be made by congress, at the
coming session, to remodel the
inter-state and anti-trust laws,
seems plentiful. Tnese measur
es and those the president open
ly advocates, would a'l be for the
interests, and the people, general
ly, view them ns such. The
progressive Republican members
of congress view them in like
manner and will, probably, make
things pretty hot alsnit the
capítol, before these measures
become laws. Of course the
coterie of renegade Democrats,
who assisted in making Speaker
Cannon the American czar, will
lw ready to give these measun-s
their support, for they are owned,
body and soul, by the inter« Sts.
The logical outcome of th s
congressional fight, will be a
n«*w alignment of politi al part
ies. Senators Cummings, LiFol-
lette. Bristow and other progres
sives. ar»* better Democrats, t< -
day. than they are Republicans
This ia true and Sj^aker Cannon,
in effect, is authority for the
statement.
