If a protective tariff will keep wa­
ges high, why are wages now but
half What they were in 1866, and at
the same time the average tariff is
much higher? The fact of the busi­
ness is the pay of the laborer is re­
gulated, as our laws now are, entire­
ly by the law of supply and demand.
It is nonsense to suppose that an
’employer will not get labor as cheap
as he can. If labor is to be protected
against competition with the low
priced European, such European
must be denied the free access to
this country. If a tariff is placed
upon the product of labor, it should
be placed as well upon labor itself.
All fair minded men are convinced
of this fact. If the republican tariff
policy remains in vogue it must
keep up with,the march of miproye-
ment in ideas. Meh are thinking
now-a-days,and the scales are falling
from their eyes.
Hon. Roswell G. Horr is making
republican speeches in the Wiliam
ette Valley towns. Senator W. M.
Stewart is also in Eastern Oregon
making populist speeches and will
be in Western Oregon before the
campaign is over.
