BRICH r PROSPECTS FOR FARMERS The June report of the Statistician of the department of agriculture takes a hopeful view of the agricul tarai situation. Prices for Wheat are higher than they were a year ago, although then they had mate rially advanced from a much lower figure. The prospects for a good crop are bright, and still more to the advantage of our farmers, the crop in Europe is reported light. S.ince harvest is now pretty near and met eorological and other risks reduced, there can be little doubt that good ¡.trices will be realized. Let our- far-, .liieisbewarer h»We,&ei y of accepting higher prices as an invitation to en largement of the next breadth by a few million acres, or the situation may be reversed in a single season, With a recurrence of the rural “de pression” now happilv passe-1 way; let them beware of the false and dangerous theory that we cannot produce wheat enough to reduce the World’s wheat prices,or even enough for our own use after a few more shiploads of immigrants shall supple ment the natural increase of our population. Such a belief generally acted on would in two years make the cheapest wheat of the century, and give an intense cefüleah hue to the entire rural atmosphere. Grow ers, go Slow in the extension of Wheat area! The prospects foï barley, also, are' considered good. This has always been one of the most satisfactory crops our farmers could raise, but the competition from Canada, which has been accustomed tb send to ouf markets annually barley to the Value of nearly $10,000,000; has grievously Oppressed our own barley growers. But the neW tariff has corrected, this injustice and barley growing has en tered upon a boom. A decided en largement in the barley acreage has taken place, and good prices are al most a certainty. The condition of the crop is very satisfactory. The act of the Michigan legisla ture, providing for choiee of presi dential electors by popular vote L t ie congressional districts, contin ues to excite discussion, and may leid to action on the same or parallel lin is in other states. To the extent that the action of Michigan in th s matt r is regarded as a tendency io make he presidential electors moie directly the choice of the people it .vill be endorsed by ihe public. ~ To the extent that it seems to be a par ty measure; as it clearly seems to be in this case, it will be condemned bj popular sentiment. There is a gen- ■ral feeling which, however, is no shared to any great extent by partj managers, that presidential elector might be done away . with entirely to manifest advantage, the voters indicating their choice in this mat ter directly, instead of by the pres ent second-hand method. An amend ment to the federal constitution providing for this Would meet with general favor, but with the proverb ial reluctance of legislative, bodies'tb interfere with constitutional law, it will probably not ,be compassed Within th? present century.—Ore gonian.
