It was w h e n T ops’l
Barney, Rangy, and I went
ashore on th ’ island of
Borneo to get drinking wa

A fter leavin’ th ’ schoon
er we pulled in close to
shore, keepin’ a sh a rp look
out for natives, for th ’ sav
ages on this island were
cannibals, and we d id n 't
care to be popped into a
stew -pot.
We’d ju s t about decided
there were no natives about,
when from th ’ depths of th ’
i tingle came a yell th at
lifted th ’ h air on our heads.
“ Sufferin’ snipes, w ot’s
th a t? ,” growled Barney.
“ Sounded like th ’ yell of
a crazy m an,” says I, fing
e rin ’ my gun and peerin’ In
to th ' d a r k shadows o f th ’
jungle. We had to have
w ater, so we rowed Into a
little cove and tied th ’ boat
to a m angrove tree
A fter ntakin' certain th at
no suvuges were about we
s ta rte d off into th ’ jungle.
It was while Burney was
llllln' u keg with w ater
from a little creek th u t th ’
wild man slipped from
am ong th ’ trees and got my
rifle th a t I had leaned
ag ain st a tree.
B ang w ent th gun! T h ’

and I were ru n n ln ’ for our
jive», with a shaggy-head
ed, wild-eyed, two-legged
thing th a t looked som ethin’
like a m an chasin’ us and
wavin’ t h ’ gun.
Well a’r, we got to th ’
boat, and when we looked
back th ’ wild m an had van
ished. Soon a fte rw a rd B ar

hove in sight. He was
sta n d in ’ on shore, tcllin ’ us
th a t th ’ stra n g e c ritte r was
a white m an, when out of
th ’ brush jum ped th ’ wild
m an, grabbed th ' keg of
w ater, sm ashed it over B ar
ney’s head, then raced a w a y .
In my next y arn I’ll tell
you how we cap tu red th ’
