Years ago 1
left rty ship In Australia to
go huntin' for gold. Well
a'r. It Would take a great
many yarns to tell you
what happened to me on
that gold hlint.
Here's
what happeiidd first?
One mornln’, aa 1 wan
Walkin' along a river look-
in* out mighty aharp for
gold, I naw somethin’ shin­
in' on th’ bottom of th’
stream. By gravy, nays I,
that looks like gold, sure
pop!
With my gold-pan
and my nhovel 1 waded into
th’ river and commenced
washin* th* gravel for gold.
And sure enough, when all
th* dirt nnd small atones
were washed out of th’ pan
I naw shiny hits in th* gra­
vel. Wow, I was excited 1
I started tossin* some of
th* big rocks out of th' pan
onto th* bank back of me.
A ll at once somethin’
landed with a thump on my
back and over I went, gold-
nn and all, Into th’ river.
('hen 1 got my head above
water again 1 was honpln’
mad, 1 tell you. Then I saw
what had boosted me Into
th’ river. Squatted on his
hind-legs, wigglin' his whis­
kers, and givin' me th’
merry eye was a big kan­
garoo.

Well a’r, I scrambled
ashore and went for that
big, sassy joker. Th’ dust
was /ly in ’ around there for
a few minutes, and I must
say that long-legged critter
put up a whale of a fight,
hut in th’ end I got him by
th’ ears, rubbed his nose In­
to th’ dirt, and tamed him
good and plenty.

After that, w h e n he
found out who was boss, we
became great pals. Rangy,
that’s what I named him,
was as smart as mustard,
and In no time at ail 1
taught him to help me wash
gold out of th’ river grave).
