Y oungsters, T m goin’ to
sp in a yarn today that I
think w ill tickle you.
Years ago I shipped as
harpoon« i on a whnling
cruise. We were cruisin’ in
th' A rctic Ocean, keepin’
our eyes peek'd for w hales,
when th' lookout bawled
ou t:
“Thar she blo-o-w -w -s!“
We tum bled into
t h*
boats, and awnv we went.
T h ’ w hale was ‘bout a m ile
aw ay, and th* boat 1 w as in
reached him first.
Hein'
hurpooner, I lost no tim e in
p u ttin ’ an Iron i n t o his back
Wow, w hat a rum pus start
ed then. Off went th ’ w hale
like an express-train, with
our boat fastened to him
with th ’ harpoon-line. A ll
a t once 1 saw we -were get-
tin' m ighty close to a big
ice-field, b efore you could
say Jack Robinson th at
foxy old w hale dovo and
scooted under th* ice-field.
Qulcker'n a wink, I cut th*
lisrpooa-rope.
W ell s’r, th ’ boat wan
shootin* ahead no fa st that
it lunded on th ’ ice and
kept right on goin' At first
we were goin’ up th ’ ice-
h ill. N ear th’ top th ’ boat
«lowed down, then it slid
w a r th ’ top and ntarted
down th ’ other aide, lickityr
aplit. Ju st below w iu an
Eskim o village.
In a few
seconds our boat plunked
right into a big «now -drift,
right in th ’ fron t yard of
th ’ E skim os, you m ight »ay.
Laughin’ at such a funny
night, th ’ Eskim os came
and hauled us out o f th ’
th ’ «now, then rubbed their
nose« again st ours, which
wt^s their way of sayin ’ how
do you do. Then they all
helped ua to haul our boat
back to th ’ top o f th ’ ice-
hill. A fter th ey’d rubbed
noses with us again, which
w as their way o f say in*
good-bys, also, they gwve
our boat a shove and away
we went dow® th* ice and
out onto th* w ater once
