DECEM BER 11». 1929 TAX G in 'S EOR CHRISTMAS A nnouncem ent th a t sta te property taxes would be cut one million dollars is welcome new s out of Salem at C hristm as tim e. Sim ilarly the feder a l governm ent will m ake g rea t reductions next year. G reater econom ies in s ta te gevernm ent and a new law tax in g incom es from intangibles has enabled the sta te to m ake property tax reduc tions. T his is a good s ta rt in th e direction of relieving property of excessive tax burdens th a t th e co u n try has been asking for. However, taxes generally, and in cities especi ally, will not be lowered, because m ost of the local budget com m ittees have been busy levying up to th e full six per cent limit. W hat th e sta te and county m ay cut cities and school districts generally tak e up. T he real problem in tax atio n is the local taxing boards, and people in m any cities are beginning to realize it. As in Eugene of late, tax levies in m any cities subm itted to th e people have been defeated decisively. * • • • M c K enzie work is ordered T he s ta te oiling program calls for oil on the M cKenzie highw ay next spring from Nim rod to Belknap. T he road will also be resurfaced in th e B elknap district. C o n tracts are to be let for the relocation of the McKenzie highw ay from W alter- ville to Doyle Hill. T his season will see m uch activity in road w ork on the McKenzie, if not th e to ta l com pletion of the highw ay. T he McKenzie m eans m ore to Springfield th an any o th e r road, and it is w ith satisfaction we view progress to w ard its ultim ate com pletion. T he s ta te also will oil m ore of th e coast road beyond T riangle Lake. At least tw o sections of th e Roosevelt highw ay in Lane county will be under c o n tra c t and a n o th e r section of the Wil lam ette highw ay leading tow ard Oakridge. • • • Som e of these sm art editorial w riters who criticize the Finnish boy’s English a t the Oregon Btate college m ight ask them selves how well th ey could speak Finnish if th ey should find them selves in th is lad ’s native country. He says in his study of biology th a t th ere are 600,00 species of a n i m al life, and he doubts if a pair of each kind was ever crow ded into N oah’s ark. This professor evidently th in k s too logical to be a good pro fesso r in a religious institution. • • • We welcom e G eorge S tanley to our m idst as a business m an and property ow ner. T he headlines w ere so big he had to h o ller to read ’em. YOUTH ‘‘T his is the age of y o u th .” How often we hear (hat said, som etim es with th e hopeful view th at youth, som ehow , is going to m ake the world over Every age has been the age of youth. Young folks a re m ore vociferous just now th a n they were before the war. T hey get m ore publicity, m ainly because th ere a re m ore m edium s of publi city. But in all history it has been youth which has gone adventuring, w hich his injected new ideas into the w orld’s th o u g h t, which h as sta rte d m ovem ents, which have, in tim e, changed social and econom ic conditions. it w as youth th a t settled America. T he Pilgrim F a th ers were m ostly boys in th eir tw en ties when they landed on P lym outh Rock. T h e pioneers ot Virginia and Pennsylvania were no older. F rom the beginning, young folk have done things of which th eir elders did not approve. "T he only service the young can ren d e r th e old Is to shock them and so keep them up to d a te ." says G eorge B ernard Shaw in one of his plays. A m an o r w om an m ust be very old Indeed o r have a very poor m em ory, to have fo rgotten th a t in his or her y outh th e old folks seldom approved of th e a c tiv ities and in terests of the young. And w hen the young people of today have be com e th e p a re n ts of boys and girls of eighteen o r tw enty, they too. will be shocked by th e things th eir children will do or w ant to do. • • • AND NOW— T H E CROSS STA TE LINE T he cross s ta te railroad from C rane to C res c e n t I^ike, 109 miles, has been ordered built by th e In te rsta te com m erce com m ission. It is the last railroad on the Oregon public service com m ission’» program , and the one for which the s ta te body has w orked hardest. W hether the Union Pacific, w ho has been o r dered to build th e road, will resist th e o rd er is n o t know n. But a progressive step has been tak e n by the com m erce com m ission, and em phasis h as been placed on the need for serving this te rrito ry by rail. If th e railroads expect the people of th e co u n try to g u a ra n te e them six per cent on investm ents, then they m ust also expect to listen to the people’s rep re sen ta tiv e s when they dem and new railroads. We believe this road will be built in th e next few years. W hen it is co n stru cted th W illam ette valley will have a sh o rte r ro u te to the east, which will m ean m uch in these days of rapid tra n s p o r tatio n . C entral Oregon and Idaho will have an o u tle t to th e coast and th ere is no doubt pro fit able trad e relations will result.
