Islands. A relief fund of $5.883.725 62
was contributed by the public, follow

of the U nited S tates, to which th-

hied to give relief to more than 70o.

In Florida,
where 1.810 lives were lost, the Red
Cross aided 41,236 persons
in Porto
Rico and the Virgin islands, w here the
loss of life was not so great, but where
the d evastation was alm ost com plete,
th e Red C ross aided 731,712 persons
D estruction of the coffee plants war
the gravest loss, and the Red Cross
aided in reh ab ilitatin g th is industry
by em ploying 67.CJ0 natives to clear
the eoffee-land. so th at replanting
would go forw ard Im m ediately, thus
providing work and wages for thou­
sands.
LABOR HEAD URGES
SUPPORT OF RED CROSS
"In v ariab ly it is tb s masses of the
people which suffer most when disas­
ters occur," stated W illiam Green,
p resident of th e American Federation
of Labor, recently.
"Because they suffer n.ost and be
cause of th e ir helplessness, the minis
tra tio u s of th e Red Cross organization
take on added significance and impor
tance. No doubt many lives among
these p artic u la r groups are saved
thro u g h the prom pt service which this
organization gives.
"B ecause the A m erican Federatioh
of Labor app reciates th is fact, we have
supplem ented the appeal of the Ameri­
can Red Cross a t each Roll Call period
for m em berships from th e g reat mans
of w orking men and women and th eir
fam ilies.
"T h e continued service o the Amer­
ican F ed eratio n of L abor In this most
hum ane and unselfish work will be
most cheerfully rendered."
