Ju stice for all is a great principal in this country but it should not be m ade a m ockery of u n reaso n ableness. T he state highw ay com m ission in offering to build 100 feet m ore bridge on the west end to settle the controversy is reasonable, and is taking a step at least half way in settling the co n tro versy, especially in light of the fart th at both the sta te and the federal engineers advise them that it is not needed. If the people of West Spring- field continue to hold out th en it m ust be con cluded th a t they hold th eir selfish interest above th a t of the general public and do not wish to see th e bridge ever finished. T he public will soon get tired of being the goat and seeing justice tu rn e d into stubborn self ishness. • • • W e believe th a t th e road to the coast should be finished, if for nothing else because it is a federal highw ay. But $75,000 a mile seem s to us a little high. P erhaps som e of the arg u m en t used on th e county court to get the road through reg a rd less of cost would be b e tte r used on property holders to get th e expense of right of way down. We m u st have th e road it is granted, and the people willingly voted $100,000 to help out, th in k ing it would cost less th an a million dollars. The w a te r grade a rg u m en t doesn't seem so sound to us w hen we th in k of the snake trail over the low pass in order to get to th e M apleton-C ushm an section. A road is little b e tte r than its w eakest portions. It seem s as if the w ealth of w om enis to in crease by leaps and bounds, until wom en will dom inate the country financially. T his is not at impossible, in fact everything points to the co n clusion th a t if women keep up th eir speed in acquiring m oney they will be fa r ahead of men in this respect. W ithin the past few years, sociologists have been ran tin g about w om en’s place in the home. and all that sort of th in g / never realizing how firmly intrenched women are in the financial lit«' of the land. It isn't even im probable that in a cen tu ry or so the tables will be tu rn e d and men w ill be clam oring for equal rights. • • • Lindstrom and Fiegcrson, w ho com pleted the Springfield bridge several weeks a h e ad of their co n tract, have done a n o th e r speedy job in Port- lnd. On a viaduct they have put in a claim for $200 a day because they built the viaduct 21 days ahead of tim e and th eir c o n tra c t calls for a bonus. T he sta te m ight as well ask for a deed to all the land in W estern Lane county and perhaps the engineers will have sufficient to build the coast road on. Those McKenzie people who kick about an SO-foot right-of-w ay can console them selves th a t the sta te did not ask for 200 feet as it is do ing on long stre tc h e s of th e Siuslaw road. • • • A hint to shippers on railroads m ay be gotten in th e packing cra te of a Chicago m an who had sim self shipped to San Francisco. He m ade the c ra te with tapering ends so he could not be stood on his head. Tw o women, each claim ing to be the wife of a m an who died in C hicago the o th e r day met at his funeral. Lucky for him they did not meet beforehand. Scientific investigation now rep o rts that blondes blush m ore than b ru n ettes. But th a t T o the W est not so m uch on race prejudice the doesn’t m ean m uch blushing is going on n eg ro co n g ressm an ’s wife a t Mrs. H oover's party now adays. only invokes a smile. We d o n 't sanction in ter m arriag e of th e black and w hite races, b ut see no need of h u rtin g the feelings of an intelligent T he a n c esto r of the whale is now believed to and refined negro. W hen Mrs. Hoover gave a have lived on land. Som e sh a rk s have never te a for the wives of all congressm en she could tak e n to w ater, it seem s. n o t very well exclude one because she was a negro. And by th e way, the second lady of the land, the vice-president's sister, is part Indian. • • • Editorial Comme nt» N early all the com m ittee of W est Springfield people, who are holding up the bridge approach com pletion, a re m en engaged in business m ade possible by the fine highw ay the public has built p a st th eir properties. If th ey were consistent and fair they would be the last to hold up any Im provem ent of the highw y system . If som eone bad held up the building of th e Pacific highway or had th e grade raised or th e route changed, they would not be w here they are today and have th e opportunity to o b stru ct progress. • • • M ichigan boasts of being the largest bean pro ducing state.
