People who advocate consolidation point to the
fact that Springfield's tax levy for city purposes
Is six ndlls higher th an Eugene's. W hen we learn
th a t Eugene has overrun her 1927 budget som e
$3S.O00 we w onder if a fte r all th e re would have
been m uch difference in tax levy if Eugene had
levies sufficient to ta k e care of her expenses. And
we w onder still m ore how she is going to tak e
c a re of som e $307,000 o u tsta n d in g w a rra n t in­
debtedness built up from years past as th is re g u ­
lar overrunning of the budget took place. Will
Springfield people be required to help liquidate
these unpaid w a rra n ts if th e tow ns were consoli­
dated?
Springfield m ight have a low er ta x levy if som e
of th e property holders w ith delinquent a s ­
sessm ents w ere not requiring th e city to keep up
th eir principal and in te rest p aym ents for them .
Som e of these delinquent property holders can
well afford to pay th e ir back a ssessm en ts and
lighten th e burden on th e re s t of the city. Som e
of the w orst offenders in this reg ard are those
w ho are advocating consolidation. Actually they
a re th e ones w ho are responsible for a higher levy
th a n we would have otherw ise.
