sentiments are subordirated to self-advancement and suc

has not only endured l^ut grown in pow er during nearly
2 ,0 0 0 years? If the pessimists are right, it would seem that the light
would have been extinguished long;since and with it the spirit would
have departed.

W ere history and our daily I Ves not replete w ith evidences —
noble evidences to o —of the unse fishness in men’s hearts, w e might
be impressed w ith the teachings of the sordid and the carpings of
the morbid. Christmas is the symbol and a celebration of love—love
which is synonymous w ith charity and which our purest teaching
tells us is the finest attribute of the soul. W e , w ho during the paSt
few weeks have w atched the Y uletide preparations, are prepared to
say that they represent a beautiful manifestation of that attribute.
W e have noted the working girl taking home at night her par
cels; contributions wrung from the dole of her necessities, in order
that she may testify to her love and bring a measure of cheer to
some child, some relative, some friend. Tired from her daily toil may
hap, hut in her eyes that something which transcends all fatigue;
transcends, in fadt, everything else in the world and comparable only
to that which shone from a mother’s eyes upon tjie B abe in Bethle
hem. Friends, in the face of these and so many other manifestations
which w e are all witnessing during this season, w hat right has one
of us to say that the Light of the W orld grows dim m er?
O u r hearts tell us there is no dimming. L et us he thankful for
the extra radiance of Christmas. L et us seek to carry it into our daily
lives. O u r wish is, that this occasion, at leaSt, will help all of us to
forget our tribulations and sorrows, our complaints and animosities,
and that it will be to all a day of cheer and everything which Yule-
tide typifies. T h e w ords of T iny T im have never been improved
upon and w e here invoke them : “ G od bless us all 1 ”
