ELECTING A POPE Pope Benedict XV died In Rome last Snnday morning, after reign of about seven years. The process of lectins li sucssor. which will doubtless be described la detail by the daily papers as it goes on will be an Interesting study to all who wish to Inform themselves on such matters. All students of the high school, and the teachers as well, and young per sons woo desine to be well Informed en current affairs; everyone. In fact, should pay close attention to the news paper accounts of this election. None bat a cardinal Is eligible to the popacy and none but cardinals ran vote for a pope. The cardinalata Is not an office, bat a rank, conferre 1 ty the pope, as a king confers a patent of nobility. The pope creates the cardinals, and the cardinals create new pope. The cardinals, as to of fice, are mostly archbishops or bi hops. Occasionally, a cardinal may told some other office. For Instance, the pope's secretary of state, as in the present case and some former cases, may be a cardinal. The ma jority of the cardinals hare always been Italians. The ceremonies connected with th funeral of a pope occupy the nine days following his dath. On the tenth day the election takes place, or the process begins. That shou'd be next Wednesday. TOWN AND VICINITY Mr. and Mrs. Malloy and fcur child ren and Mrs. William Paulman and son stopped over on Monday to spend the night with Mrs. Anna Glend-n ning, an old neighbor of theirs in Minnesota. They are on their way borne from an extended motor trip to Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, where they have been visiting rela tives. They report a very pleasant trip, but did not find the climate so much ahead of that of Oregon. His hand Is j completely healed, but badly scarred. and it will require at good deal of time jand special care and treatment to bring it back to anything like its 'proper flexibility. Prof. Lambert has noted that there has been more tardiness among the grade pupils thus far this year than there ought to be.
