The general scaling down of prices has caused more or less of disturbance of business. Things do not come down on the same scale all the way along. There is a good deal of seesawing. There is a good deal of gambing on the part of indi viduals and classes about the con ditions tl ey were called upon to ac cept in the readjustment. The op rations of various industries and lines of business activity were thrown out of line by the war demands; and much of waste and loss and clash of Interest has to be encountered In get ting them to going in a normal way again. The few months Just past have probably seen the worst that we shall have to endure in tt Is way. To turn to local affairs. We have had the longest season of almost con tinuous rain that tha country has ever known. We call the rainy sea ton in this country winter. Although It began n the last of August, this eason will probably be spoken of in the years to come as tre long winter. We have come to the opening of spring, the time of renewal of genera! activity. The clouds will not pass away all at once. It may be Just as "well if we do not have a sudden change from wet to dry. We have been cooped up so long by the rainy weather that we hardly know what o do wth our freedom since it has "There's More Real Satisfaction" says the Good Judge W-B CUT is a long fine-cut tobacco RIGHT CUT is a short-cut tobacco GENERAL AUCTIONEERING S. The demorali- j zatlon of the lumber" tudust ry, our chief industry, from the goner causes mentioned above, of course is detremental to all our interest. Th- negotiations- going on but ween th- various interests concerned will no rloubt bring mutters to a working basis before long. The natural de mand, held in check so long, will as sert itself. The suspens'on of the local mill, prolonged from week to week, of course makes soinotl ing of a pinch. The unccrtait.ty as to the time of starting up unsettles alt the I J J.s olj thoji" whose calculat "H are based on the mill work. We arc hopeful that this suspense will soon I be ended. j There has been a good deal of ' running down at the heel In condl- j tions and appearances about town. Not much las been done for a good while in the way of new building or extensive repairs. The walks all over town are In bad, condifon. The high school building has come to a tondition where it Is a question from season to season whether it can be longer used or not. The recent f:re ! left an ugly blotch in the business! section of tie town. But conditions like this r,nalI. reach a point where the remedy forces itself. When a stir for better ttlne begins in one place it extends to th whole community. It looks as though a movement upward was in sight in Springfield Probably more cement walks have been laid In the heart of the town rTght along through th latter part of the rainy season than have been laid in a like period for several years.
